TS 2008 - Printer not being Redirected
Windows 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Easy Print Issue
XP connects fine remotely but Windows Easy Print is issue

Event ID 372: The document failed to print
The client printer shows up on Windows 2008 R2 but can't print

The client printer shows up on Windows 2008 R2 but can't print

Situation: The client installed TS on their DC running on Windows 2008 R2. After that the remote clients using RDC can't send print job to the printer connecting to remote computer. The printer redirection works fine and we can see them, but when we try to send the print job, it doesn't print. The Event Viewer also logs this message:

Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Admin
Source: Microsoft-Windows-PrintService
Event ID: 372
Task Category: Printing a document
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic Spooler Event,Document Print Job
User: chicagotech.local\blin
Description:

The document Untitled - Notepad, owned by blin, failed to print on printer 041hp4050 (redirected 4). Try to print the document again, or restart the print spooler.
Data type: RAW. Size of the spool file in bytes: 23044. Number of bytes printed: 0. Total number of pages in the document: 1. Number of pages printed: 0. Client computer: \\laptop. Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 5. Access is denied.

Troubleshooting: It is not recommended to install Terminal Services on a Domain Controller for the security reason. For many small business, they don't have choice, the resolution is using cacls command to assign permission to spool by following these steps:

1. Click Start, search for cmd.exe

2. Right click on cmd.exe

3. Click on 'Run as Administrator'

4. Type "C:\" w/o the quotation marks and then Press Enter.

5. Type CD\Windows\System32\Spool and then Press Enter.

6. Type Cacls.exe PRINTERS /e /g users:C and then Press Enter.

7. Restart the computer

Printer Redirection doesn't work in Windows 2008. The resolution is using Terminal Services Easy Print printer driver first. Terminal Services Easy Print printer driver is located in the following node of the Local Group Policy Editor:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Printer Redirection
The possible values are:
• Enabled or Not configured: If this policy setting is enabled or not configured, the terminal server will first try to use the Terminal Services Easy Print driver to install all client printers. If for any reason the Terminal Services Easy Print driver cannot be used, a printer driver on the terminal server that matches the client printer will be used. If the terminal server does not have a printer driver that matches the client printer, the client printer will not be available for the Terminal Services session. By default, this policy setting is not configured.
• Disabled: If you disable this policy setting, the terminal server will try to find a suitable printer driver to install the client printer. If the terminal server does not have a printer driver that matches the client printer, the server will try to use the Terminal Services Easy Print driver to install the client printer. If for any reason the Terminal Services Easy Print driver cannot be used, the client printer will not be available for the Terminal Services session.

Terminal Services Easy Print driver doesn't work. Windows Terminal Services printing has been enhanced in Windows Server® 2008 by the addition of the Terminal Services Easy Print printer driver. The Terminal Services Easy Print printer driver is a very useful feature in Windows Server 2008 that enables users to reliably print from a Terminal Services RemoteApp™ program or from a terminal server desktop session to the correct printer on their client computer. It also enables users to have a much more consistent printing experience between local and remote sessions. Please check this post for more details: What new functionality does this feature provide?

If the Terminal Services Easy Print driver doesn't work, please check these two requirements:

  • Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) 6.1
  • At least Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Please check this post for requirement: What is required to use TS Easy Print

Printer Redirection works only one printer but others. This could be Redirect only the default client printer policy that allows you to control whether the default client printer is the only printer redirected in a Terminal Services session, or whether all printers are redirected in a session.  This policy is located in the following node of the Local Group Policy Editor:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Printer Redirection
The possible values are:
• Enabled: If you enable this policy setting, only the default client printer is redirected in Terminal Services sessions.
• Disabled or Not configured: If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, all client printers are redirected in Terminal Services sessions. By default, this policy setting is not configured.

Terminal Services Easy Print is disabled. To use Terminal Services Easy Print is disabled, you must install Terminal Server on Windows 2008. Here are the quote from Microsoft:

When you connect to a server that does not have Terminal Server installed
If a member of the Administrators group starts a Remote Desktop session to a Windows Server 2008-based server that does not have the Terminal Server role service installed, the following conditions are true for the remote administration session:
Time zone redirection is disabled.
Terminal Services Session Broker (TS Session Broker) redirection is disabled.
Plug and Play device redirection is disabled.
The remote session theme is changed to Windows Classic.
Terminal Services Easy Print is disabled.

The Easy Printer doesn't work if login using /admin switch. Again this is from Microsoft:

When you connect to a server that has Terminal Server installed
If a member of the Administrators group starts a Remote Desktop session to a Windows Server 2008-based server that has the Terminal Server role service installed, they must use the /admin switch to connect to a session to remotely administer the server. The following conditions are true for the session:
  • You do not have to have a TS CAL to remotely administer a terminal server.
  • Time zone redirection is disabled.
  • Terminal Services Session Broker redirection is disabled.
  • Plug and Play device redirection is disabled.
  • The remote session theme is changed to Windows Classic.
  • Terminal Services Easy Print is disabled.
