Resolution of Windows Roaming User Profile Issues

  1. If you receive a message that indicates that your roaming profile is not available, this typically means that the roaming profile might not be found in the expected place. 1) Make sure you have a good connection; 2) make sure you have shared roaming profile folder; 3) Make sure no DNS issue.
  2. If the roaming profile works for XP but Windows Vista/7, make sure you have two versions for each OS because Roaming Profiles between XP and Vista/7 are incompatible. You may need to create Version1 profile for XP and Version2 profile for Vista/7.
  3. If you keep each user profile separately, make sure you use %USERNAME% in the path to the roaming profile shared folder.
  4. If you receive Event ID 1504: Windows cannot update your roaming profile completely, make sure 1) You can connect to the DC; 2) the user sufficient permission on the user profile folder; 3) Check system logs for networking-related or DNS errors. Several problems or conflicts can occur in a roaming profile environment, which basically result in administrative questions.
  5. If you receive Event ID 1509 with message: Windows cannot copy file and This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights. Clients log on with temporary profile with error "User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded". This can happen if the destination path is longer than the supported 260 chars.
  6. If you receive "Windows cannot copy file. Possible causes of this error include network problems or insufficient security rights. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator. DETAIL - Access is denied". That could be 3rdparty security software, for example MacAfee.
  7. If the shortcuts on the Desktop don’t work, that could be the current computer you log on has different set up in the same way, for example Microsoft Word shortcut point to C:\program files, but the word is install on D drive of the logon computer.
