Situation: When trying to join a laptop to the domain, I get as far as where you are asked to enter a username/password/domain. This is accepted so the password is verified.

I then click OK, and it says that a domain controller could not be contacted.

So far I have:

-Changed netbios name
-fully removed & reinstalled Client for MS Networks and TCP/IP as there were some old DNS entries that I thought may have been causing the problem.
- Tried to connect via VPN connection (NCP)
- flushed laptops DNS cache

In summary, the error log says:

- The domain name might not be a NetBIOS domain name.
- Error was: "DNS Name does not exist"

Problem solved: It was down to Zone Alarm firewall needing an entry in the trusted zone, although it didn’t alert me to this fact and was by chance that I thought it could be a firewall issue.
