Spammers use a technique called "Directory Harvesting" They will shotgun email to addresses that they make up, in the hopes of finding VALID email adresses. 2. If your Exchange server is directly facing the Internet for SMTP traffic, consider implementing tarpitting. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842851/en-us 3. More likely than not, some spammer has sent out a blanket email to your domain. Make sure that you have enabled IMF. Check out the tutorial here: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Intelligent-Message-Filter-version-2-IMF-v2.html 4. That's called Directory Harvesting. It can be made worse by recipient filtering under the right circumstances. Enabling tarpitting can help reduce the likelihood of directory harvesting.
