Hello Dave,

Select the 'Show for all users' button at the bottom-left of the Software

Explorer screen. Accept the UAC prompt.

You do not state what you are actually running as administrator after mapping

the drive.

Once the game is installed, The program should not need subsequent credential

checks. If the autorun is trying to run setup again, you will get this prompt

every time. If I was in your situation, I would disable CD autorun.

The root of the C: drive is a very bad place to store files. You should

create a folder and store files in the folder. What files do you want to

store in the root? Perhaps there's a better way to accomplish what you are

doing.

It sounds like some program or service that is running is not Vista

compatible. Did this always happen or is it something new? Did you upgrade

from XP or was this a clean install?

Hi there..

Thanks for your response...

Unfortunately, I have already tried this option and it did not work, I

burned the image file and tried to boot it, however the laptop just boots

from HDD, I tried to amend the BIOS option to change the boot order but it

won't let me.

It says it needs to be done by the admin/supervisor (which is ME!!!) but I'm

using the same old password I always have for the BIOS screen...

I'm afraid nothing I have tried has worked...

I'm using Vista Home Premium / Acer 5582WXMi

Any other suggestions?

Kind regards

Check the manual that came with the laptop (or go to the Acer web site) and

look for instructions as to how to reset the BIOS or clear the BIOS

password. The proceedure for laptops is often different from that for

desktop machines.

Hello,

1) I'm not sure, but I think it is greyed out because if you are logged in

using the account "Administrator", all programs are executed as

Administrator anyway.

2) Still, if you are using an administrative account, there are some

programs which need higher rights (Programs are normally executed with lower

rights, so that they can't do harm). For that, right-click cmd, and click

"Run as administrator".

3) Is the location, for instance, Program Files? Then right-click the

folder, click Properties -> tab "Security" -> Advanced -> tab "Owner" and

make yourself the owner of all files (there's a check box to check for all

files). Then, if it doesn't work, go back to Properties -> tab "Security",

and add yourself to the list, and give all groups and users your user name

belongs to the necessary writing rights.

Hope this helps.

I have tried all that as been suggested and still no joy. As you say It may

be that I am running as the "Administrator".

I do have a question about this if I am running as a guest or other user how

could I change permissions if I was not signed in as an Administrator?

Also how do I get Administrator permissions when I run in CMD mode? (I am

running as Administrator when I envoke the CMD mode)

Thanks

Hello,

you should be able to change the permission without being logged on as the

so-called "Administrator", but with an administrative account.

For cmd, go to start, type cmd, and right-click the searched cmd, and click

"Run as administrator". It should now say "Administrator: ..." in the title

of the cmd. If it does so, you are running cmd in administrative mode.

If this is a shortcut for a program, what you are seeing is normal. Right

click the shortcut and select the Shortcut Tab. Click the Advanced Button

near the bottom and should see an available Run As Administrator option

there.

Mike

What exactly happened when you tried this?

You need to be aware that there are a couple of different types of

shortcuts.

1. Shortcuts that are created by the installation program for an

application.

2. User created shortcuts.

If this is a shortcut in the Start Menu, it was probably created by the

installation program for that application. These installer created shortcuts

can be different from a user created shortcut. The shortcut may also have

options that are not available in a user created shortcut such as a repair

option and you cannot edit the target for the shortcut. It may also have

options missing that are available in a user created shortcut, such as the

compatibility tab and other features may be missing.

What you can do is go to the executable file for that application

(appname.exe) and create a shortcut to that file. This shortcut will have

all of the standard buttons and tabs where you can set the options.

Hi Bill,

This tutorial will show you how to turn off UAC.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/48893-user-account-control-uac.html

This tutorial will show you how to take ownership of the "Windows"

folder and subfolders (subcontainers and objects) if needed. Look at

method two.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html

Hope this helps,

Disabling UAC is generally not a good idea. Doing so causes "Access Denied"

errors in places like the desktop, and My Documents preventing the user form

copying files/folders to those places. In order for this program to run

correctly, you should set it's compatibility to automatically run as

Administrator every time it runs. This will give it access to the Windows

directory allowing it to place files where they should go. Another note...

Make sure that this program is installed, and run from within an admin

account, and not a standard account! If you run do this from within a

standard account, you may not have access to all the files you need.

I'm not sure what you mean by "security disk?

If this is a backup that was created using the Vista backup program, you

will not be able to use the XP backup and restore program to retrieve the

files. They are completely different programs.

Smedevang

It depends on which type of backup you are talking about. If you did a

Complete PC Backup, then, no there is nothing you can do with this type of

Vista backup in XP, because it creates an image of the disk where Vista is

installed. If you performed a File Backup, this backup saves the files and

folders in standard .ZIP format and these zip files can be extracted with

any type of program including XP.

Website passwords are normally kept on the website where the password is

used. The information for the password is kept in a cookie file on the PC,

but these passwords cannot be read from those files.

Most websites that require a password will have a 'forgot password' option

that you can use to have that website send you the password in an email.

I think they are talking about the passwords that Internet Explorer saves for

you (aka "Do you want internet explorer to remember this password for you so

that you don't have to enter it each times you visit this site?").

(Autocomplete)

As far as I know there are not ways to view these saved passwords without

the use of an external program, and even then I'm not sure it's possible with

Windows Vista.

System file protection would not strip the ACL from the file. It could be

Group Policy, it could be a security template that is being pushed out by

an administrator

You can check the SFC entries by examining this log file:

At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

It finds nothing. Further info is that since posting my original post, the

Go to Start and type cmd.exe and press Enter. This will open a command

prompt window.

Type:

net user

Press Enter.

This will give you list of all user accounts on the system. Next, type:

net user

Press Enter.

Where is one of the accounts that were shown after the first

command.

Repeat this command for each of the accounts shown in step one.

After this is complete, click the icon on the top/left corner of the command

window and go to Edit and click Select All. Press the Enter key. This will

copy everything on the screen to the clipboard.

Steve

Everything appears to be normal. According to the net user command everyone

is an administrator except the Guest account which is the way it should be.

When you go to Control Panel/User Accounts and click the 'Change account

type' option, the only possible choice will be automatically select. In

other words, if you are already an administrator, then the Standard User

option will be selected. If you try to select the Administrator option, then

the 'Change account type' button will be unavailable, because the account is

already an administrator.

About the problem with the backup drive, is this an external USB drive

or...?

Can any of the other accounts access this drive?

Do you get any error messages?

Are you accessing the drive in Windows Explorer or does this only happen

from within the backup program?

Hi Ronnie,

Thanks again for your help. I came to the same conclusion about the user

level interface after I ran your net user command. I was initially somewhat

concerned about a possible virus, although Norton Antivirus says I'm good to

go...

Regarding the backup, I have three physical hard drives. C and D are

internal, while I is a portable USB hard drive. I'm attempting to back up C

and D to the I drive. I have also attempted to back up C (only) to the D

drive. On either occasion, I get the message "Access is denied.

(Ox80070005). What's weird is that I can fully access all hard drives in

every other way (through My Computer, for example). All other users can

access all drives, as well. These drives are also shared and fully

accessable on our home network.

I did delete a previous backup (on the D drive) around a week ago in an

effort to conserve disk space. Do you think that this could be related to

the problem?

Thanks again for your assistance in this matter!

I'm looking for an answer to this backup problem as well. I posted today but

then saw your thread and decided to add comments since you seem to be getting

responses from Microsoft.

I successfully backed up to my internal D drive back in august. Ever since

(first event in log showing error was on 9/18) I have been upable to do

another backup. I get a warning notice in the taskbar that a backup is

overdue and when I attempt to do it I receive the same messages about the

access denied. Here is info from the event log.

Steve

Sorry for the delay.

This error (0x80070005) is difficult to track down, since it's a very basic

"access denied" error message that can be associated with any program or

component. What I found was a couple of references to the error when using

the backup program in Vista.

From the product team that handles the backup program.

The Filing Cabinet : Common causes and solutions to Backup, System Restore,

and Complete PC Backup problems:

https://blogs.technet.com/filecab/pages/common-causes-and-solutions-to-backup-system-restore-and-complete-pc-backup-problems.aspx

File Backup fails with the following error:

Access is denied. (0x80070005)

This error occurs because the recovery partition is enabled for File Backup

or System Restore and is almost full. To work around this, do not select D:\

as a backup source. Also, go to System Protection in Control Panel and make

sure that D:\ is not enabled for restore points.

The only other possible solution I found was from a user on these groups.

He was getting the same exact error message, trying to use an external USB

drive. He reported that when he change the USB port for the drive, all of

the errors disappeared.

If neither of these fixes work, you might want to try looking in the Event

Viewer (Administrative Tools/Event Viewer) and look under Custom

Views/Administrative Events for any "!" or "X" error messages that coincide

with the time you last tried the backup on that drive.

If you do find an event, double click the event to open it, click the Copy

Button at the bottom of the dialog and paste the results back here in a

reply.

This sounds like the double user account problem that several other people

have reported here.

The users reporting this problem all have a few things in common.

1. They are using a system with a fingerprint reader.

2. They have the OmniPass program that works with the fingerprint reader.

The solution seems to be uninstalling / reinstalling the OmniPass software.

If the following does not help, you may need to contact your computer maker

to get the proper instructions for doing this.

Here is a message that was posted by a user who solved this problem.

I have two Lenovo notebooks using Vista: both 3000 N100 model.

Unfortunately the Lenovos don't come with software CDs, a they recommend

creating recovery disks which do not have the software accessible.

However, you can access the setup file to reinstall Omnipass in the

C:\SWTools\Drivers\FPRA directory.

All you need to do is uninstall Omnipass from the computer-add/remove

programs screen, and then reload Omnipass from the setup file in the

above directory. Took 5 minutes.

I'm guessing that other model computers with Vista and Omnipass are

seeing the same duplicate icon problem at the welcome screen. If you

search your computer and find the Omnipass setup file, you may be able

to use the same trick.

Let us know if this helps.

Hello,

you might find them if you look into C:\Program Files\

. They all should have something like an uninstall.exe in their folders.

When you were installing all of these programs, did you actually log in with

the extra administrator account you created and then install the programs?

If you were logging in with that administrator account when you installed

these programs and then deleted that account, I'm afraid you won't be able

to recover these uninstall settings.

Some modern software programs have a "uninstall" or "Remove" option in the

installation setup. You might try starting the installation for these

programs you are having problems with and checking the options.

Subject: Re: Unable to uninstall programs (Not the same as others)

I never ran any of these installations from within the administrator account

itself, no. I ran them from my account, and simply entered my admin password

when prompted for Admin approval. The programs ran as my admin account, and

therefor everything that I installed that way ended up in that account, and

not in my personal one. The only time I ever actually logged into the admin

account was to get the icons, and (in some cases) the actual installation

files that only showed up on that desktop. I never logged into that account

to run anything at all.

I've tried running setups for some of these programs, and either they don't

work because they need the missing information, or the installation simply

crashes without a message.

Who came up with the bright idea of programs not installing into a universal

place like this anyway??? I think this is one of the worst ideas MS came up

with. All programs should be installed into a central place, no matter which

account installs them. I shouldn't have to worry about whether a specific

admin account installed something before I go deleeting the account... All in

all... i've learned something here...

Having accounts like that may increase system security, but it's obviously

not a good idea! Now I have to reinstall Windows Vista... and when I do, I

will not add another account as admin, and I will not turn off UAC (Something

else I had a major problem with that I've since fixed on my own)

Not sure how an update would have done this, but the behavior of the

elevation prompt is controlled in the Group Policy Settings in Vista

Business.

Open GPEDIT.msc and go to Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security

Settings/Local Policies/Security Options.

Near the bottom of this dialog you will see all of the "Behavior of the

elevation prompt......" settings.

Double click the following policy.

User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in

Admin Approval Mode.

Click the drop down menu and select the "Prompt for consent" option. Ok your

way out, exit everything and reboot.

Try this: Open the Control Panel, type "uac" in the search box at upper

right corner, then select "How do I enable and disable application setup

detection"

Hi Bryan,

If you are referring to "Elevate Administrators Privilege Level", then

this tutorial will show you how to do it in all versions of Vista.

Hi Jtruslow,

You may have turned on the "Real Built-in Administrator" account. You

might try turning it off while logged in to one of your other

Administrator accounts that is not names "Administrator". This tutorial

will show you how.

Hi Rob,

Turning off UAC turns Protected Mode in IE7 off, and may cause

compatibility issues when installing some programs. You will also not be

notified to confirm a action of a program you did not know was running

that is trying to use administrator privileges.

In Vista you must save items to the desktop or a personal user folder

first, then unblock them (Right Click - Properties) before you can move

them to the other locations.

If it is really bugging you, I suppose you can enable the "built-in

administrator account" and use it for making changes to your system,

then use your other account with UAC for everyday tasks. This tutorial

will show you how to enable this account.

Hope this helps,

Shawn

Turning off UAC in Windows Vista is not recommended for several reasons!

UAC is feature designed by Microsoft to prevent unauthorized changes to your

computer. Disabling this feature could allow a program that you didn't know

was even running to gain control, and begin making changes to your system.

You say you want to be able to have access to the Program Files folder for

some programs? If you want a program to have access to the Program Files

folder, that program must be run as an administrator. This will cause UAC to

promt you for permission with the popup permission box giving you the chance

to allow, or deny the access.

If you disable UAC on your computer, then windows may not be able to prompt

you for critical operations, and may simply deny you access. For all of these

reasons, disabling UAC is not recommended, and is unsafe. Disabling it is

also more trouble than it's worth... trust me on this.
