Actually, a cheaper Home version of the ESR is
available -- at US49 only.
It has a limited functionality, pub probably still
enough to solve your
ptoblem.
Of course, there are free alternatives, too. For
example:
http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
But is is based on Linux kernel, so with a limited
hardware support, and
command-line interface (while ESR is WinPE-based and
so has GUI).

Sounds like you've got a doozy.
Since you've gone through hell and high water to
attempt a repair of the
accounts. Why not try from scratch? Copy each user's
documents, desktop, and
favorites folders to another area of the PC, export
mail too. Delete each
crippled account, and re-create them, then copy the
documents, desktop and
favorites folders back in, then import the mail.

Hello,
There isn't any reason not to install it on Cluster
that I am aware of but
not a lot of value in placing it there either.
Since the KMS host machine do not share data, having a
second KMS host
elsewhere probably works just as well.

Search Microsoft's TechNet and MSDN resources for
Active Directory and
BitLocker - there are many documents available on this
subject including a
guide to configuring BitLocker through Active
Directory.

I didn't have time to read all the documents I found,
but in general if you
can configure it via Active Directory, that includes
the ability to disable
it.

Whitefearn--
No, there is no specific GPO for preventing the use of
BitLocker.
If user's aren't running as local administrators, then
they can't enable
BitLocker anyway, so there's one way to prevent it. A
more complicated way
would be to configure the group policy that requires
backing up keys to
Active Directory but then don't do AD setup required
for this -- thus
guaranteeing BitLocker installation failure.
I am curious, though -- why do you not want to take
advantage of one of the
most important features available for protecting
mobile data on laptops?

Most of it's internal politics.
We are in the Medical Industry (HIPPA is a huge
concern) and chose Safeboot
as our encryption solution last year. So there is a
"we already spent the
time and money to do this...." mentality.
Also, there are folks who think because it is
Microsoft, there will be
security holes in it. Couple that with it being the
"first model year" of the
product they don't feel we should jump on that
bandwagon untill it is proven.

Well, let me assure you, the BitLocker code underwent
serious scrutiny
before we released it. Also, to allay another worry
your organization might
have, there are no back doors, period:
http://blogs.technet.com/steriley/archive/2007/07/13/the-bad-guys-will-use-bitlocker-too.aspx
Do your users run as local admin? If not, then as I
wrote before, they can't
enable BitLocker anyway, so no worries.

Some Vista folder aren't writeable even for Administrators group. Those
folders are mostly system folders. For example, you
don't have write
permission for the Windows Sidebar folder.
I don't know where are you trying to extract those
.zip files, but you could
write here so I can check where's the problem.

I am downloading Photoshop brushes in .zip format and
attempting to install
into C:\Program files\Adobe\Photoshop
CS3\Presets\brushes folder. I have
specified this folder in Winzip and the application
displays Access denied
when attempting to extract the files into this folder.
A workaround I have
been using is to extract all of the files in the zip
onto the desktop and
then copying and pasting all of the .abr files into
the previous listed
folder. Since most Photoshop brush creators zip many
files into one zip it is
becoming a pain to do this procedure over and
over.-irish

I suggest creating a new subdirectory(then your will
be the
creator/owner) and extract the files into it.

You cannot retrieve or reset a user account password
in Vista. There are
third party solutions for this.
I recommend this program. The price is very reasonable
and it is easy to
use, even for a novice.
A@PC Windows XP Professional Password Recovery:
http://www.password-changer.com/price.htm
If you are using a fingerprint reader, the software
for this device may have
an option to reset or retrieve the password. Check the
documentation for
that program.

A problem that many of us are having is that we are
unable to uninstall
certain programs. I myself am running Vista Home
Premium and continue to get
the error message "Administrator has not given
permission, yadda, yadda..."
when I am trying to uninstall programs. I've gotten
this message with
programs that came with my computer (like Microsoft
Works) and programs that
I installed myself (like iTunes).
I understand the process of selecting a program to RUN
as an administrator,
but I am trying to UNINSTALL and Vista will not let me do
it. Any solutions?

Hi
Are these programs that were installed on the system
prior to the upgrade to
Vista?
If so, see the following article for a step by step procedure to
resolve the problem.
You cannot uninstall a program after you upgrade to
Windows Vista:

Re: How to Synchronize User and Admin Account settings?

Stan
UAC actually does encourage using a Standard acount.
You should not be using
a separate administrator account to set the system up.
Use your Standard account and if something requires
administrator
privileges, UAC will prompt you to enter an
administrators account name and
password to elevate that process.

dean-dean, Thank you but it didn't work. I did as you

browse folders in a

The only thing that happens if I click on Restore
Defaults is the Browse
Folders section changes from "open each folder in
its own window" to "open
each folder in the same window". I still do not
have the option to do
anything in the Tasks section or the Click Items As
Follows section. Can you
help? Please don't suggest the live on-line help Dell
provides. That is
very time consuming and not very effective.

Do you have another user account that you can log on
to, to see if another
account exhibits the same problem in Folder Options?
If not, try creating a
new account, if only temporarily (you can always
delete it later). On the
Start Menu, click on your User picture, at the top of
the menu on the right
side. When the "User Accounts" window pops
up, click on "Manage another
account". Then click on "Create a new
account". Make the new account an
Administrator account.
Now Log off. Log on to the New account, and see if
Folder Options has
choices that are grayed out.

Your question is a lot more involved than I think you
realize. Also, it's
not clear to me if the various accounts you mention
are on the same machine
or on different machines. Will attempt to answer by
breaking down your
question:
1) To share gadgets: If a signed gadget is installed
by an administrator,
it will be installed in Program Files\Windows
Sidebar\Shared Gadgets\. If a
gadget is not signed or if it's installed by a
standard user to their own
account, it ends up in \User\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
Sidebar\
Gadgets in \Shared Gadgets\ are available to all users
by right clicking on
the sidebar and selecting "Add Gadgets."
Gadgets in the \AppData\ location are only available
to the user who
installed them. UNLESS.... Take a look at the
following MSDN blog article:
http://blogs.msdn.com/sidebar/archive/2006/11/09/roaming-gadgets-on-a-usb-key.aspx
It has steps for transferring gadgets to a USB key and
then editing the
config files so that the gadgets live on the USB key
but can be loaded to
the sidebar of whatever system you're logged on to.
You could probably
adapt these directions to move the gadgets to another
hard drive/user
account.
2) Copying a user profile: This procedure is rather involved
and is
overkill for what you want to do. If interested, open
Help and Support and
type "copy user profile" into the search
field; press enter. Scroll down
the page a bit for step by step directions for copying
the profile. Some
but not all preferences will transfer to the new
account. This procedure is
usually reserved for replacing corrupt profiles and
not used for creating
multiple users that are similar.
2a) Network administrators will customize these
accounts - All Users (XP)
or Default (Vista) - to create a standardized desktop for all new user
accounts. This is useful for large enterprises that
want a specific and
possibly restricted desktop for their many, many
users. If not prepared, an
errant click could cause an unpleasant restriction -
one that could be
difficult to reverse. Anyhow, I'm not finding much
with a quick search via
Vista's
Help and Support or the MS Knowledge Base but there must be info
about this somewhere (MSDN, books about Vista) but again, I would
consider
this overkill for what you want to accomplish.
I think 1) is probably more what you are looking for
to get those gadgets
easily moved to other accounts that you use.

Thank you for all the information. I am upgrading 2
computers into VISTA
(Ultimate and Business), then I am also setting up my
laptop and have two
accounts: One for business and one for personal. The
gadgets might change
later, but for now, the basic ones are in place only
in one user (laptop).
I think the best option for me is the USB mem stick.
THANK YOU!

Look up "take ownership" in Help and
Support. In general, any administrator
can edit permissions for an object to add or change
owners. A newly added
owner will then have access to the target objects.

Hi,
What I understand, if I set permission to named user
(System before crash)
and set deny to all others (including administrators),
still new installation
administrator can set the permission to new user ?
Example:
Drive C is windows vista having user Bala
Drive D in another disk folder1 permission only to
Bala
now I reinstall Vista in Drive C, in new Vista, no Original account of Bala
exist,
Can I change the permission to new user (Bala) to the
folder1 in Drive D in
new Vista
Thanks, to Sharon F

You're welcome!
Remember: Administrators always have access to any
files.
In day to day workings, a user may set their documents
to "private" and
Vista
will "block" all users from accessing them except the
"owner" (the
user that created them).
The fact remains that Administrators have access to
any files. While they
may not be able to double click a file to open it
directly , they can edit
permissions and, bingo, they now have access too.
Let's say I have 2 internal hard drives and have
protected files on D:. I
reinstall Vista on C:. My old user account is now completely gone - even if
I've create a new user account of the same name on the
new install. I think
this follows your scenario above...
I try to access one of those files on D:. Vista will still be
protecting
them for their original owner (the old me, not the new
me) and will deny
access. To regain access, I edit the permissions. When
I open the
permissions screen, Vista will show the owner
as " + a long ID
number" since it no longer possesses the
corresponding account information
to identify the original owner.
I'll edit the permissions to add my new account as
owner and files can be
accessed once again.
When beta testing Vista, I was dual booting XP and various beta versions of
Vista.
I had multiple locations for files that I wanted access to:
1) A volume of files that I kept accessible to both Vista and XP. To have
access to these files after a new install of Vista, I would edit
permissions whenever a new Vista version had to be
installed and add myself
as an owner.
2) Files that I had previously backed up to CD or DVD
with the intent to
copy them to my user folders after the new version of Vista was installed.
Since these media types use a file system that does
not support NTFS
permissions, these were accessible as soon as they
were copied to my user
folders within Vista. No editing of permissions needed.
Permissions is really the easy part since it's just an
editing exercise.
Making sure you have your data backed up on a regular
schedule is the
important part. This part is a little more difficult
but not too much once
you work out a backup routine and *keep up with it.*
By the way, this discussion excludes the use of
encryption to protect
files. That's another ball of wax entirely and must be
added to the
equation if it is in use. Home Premium doesn't ship
with or use the new Bit
Locker bits so I skipped over that aspect entirely. If
using third party
encryption, check that documentation for that product
for maintaining
access to encrypted files.

In the Start search box type cmd then right click on
cmd.exe at the top of
the list and pick Run as administrator. Alternatively
find the Command

As an administrator, you should have unrestricted
access to your childrens
standard user files. Open Windows Explorer and go to
C:\Users\childrens
account name. You can navigate through all of their
files from there.
If you want to log on with one of the childrens
standard accounts, you will
need to ask them for the password. You could also log
on with your
administrator account and go to Control Panel/User
Accounts, Manage another
account and select one of the childrens accounts. You
can change or remove
their password for the account.

As Administrator, simply set your children's passwords
to what you, the
parent, want them to be, and then give those passwords
to the children.
(Or were you thinking of sneaking behind their backs?
Can't be done
without their knowing you've tampered.)

Thanks, Ronnie. Another reason I want to know their
passwords is to be able
to get into other places like their email and see what
they are sending
/receiving. I suspect that just like me, they use the
same password for
everything. So, I ask again, is it possible to extract

Karter
I'm afraid that the passwords cannot be retrieved from
within windows.
You can access any of their information using your administrator
account. If
they are using the default Windows Mail, The emails
are in the
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail
folder. Expand this
folder and you will see all of the sub-folders. The
emails they have sent
will be in the Sent Items folder. Make sure you using
the Details View,
click once on the top of the Date Modified column to
re-order the emails by
date. You can also check the Inbox and any of the
other folders there.
Double click an email to open and read it.

If he won't listen to reason then take the computer
away from him. Look in
the manual for the factory restore procedure and
restore the computer to the
factory setup. This will erase everything on the
computer so make sure you
have backed up any important data. Once the computer
is restored to the
factory setup create an administrator for yourself and
a standard user for
your son. Make sure all administrator accounts use a
strong password that is
not a word, contains letters, numbers, and
punctuation, and is at least
eleven characters long (e.g. tbn58$FL!mhg). Look at
using the parental
controls.

Once again I'll warn you. Restoring the factory setup will
erase everything
on the computer. Backup any important data first.
