Hi Jeff,

The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions. To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.

2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue

3. At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

Thanks Dave, but No Go.

Per your instructions, I've ticked all possible system file viewing,

protected files, etc., and I still can't see all the folders that I know

exist. Again, in my case, I can't get beyond C:\users\username\..... There

are MANY folders beyond this point, as you know, but I just can't see them

in Win Explorer. Note: my system works perfectly otherwise -- no "problems"

of any kind.

Anyone please?!

Dave, disregard my first reply message to you. I think I've got it working

now. After making the changes you described, I hit "refresh" and didn't

have the folders; however, after CLOSING Win Explorer, then opening again,

all the folders seem to be there.........!

Hi, Matt.

Is this a 'permissions" problem? Are you the Administrator? Are you logged

in as such, or as a limited user?

Have you changed the default settings to show hidden files, etc.?

Since you know the files are there, but you can't reach them from outside

Office, perhaps this is an Office problem. You might get more-focused help

in one of the many Office newsgroups.

Sorry to ask more questions than I've answered, but perhaps the answers to

these will help to narrow down your problem.

Thank you for replying. I have full administrative rights. I am logged in

under administrator. Do I need to change to show hidden file?

I can also open the file from file/open within the program that is need to

run it. I just can't open it by double clicking on the file and have the

program open even though it is set to be the default program to use with that

file type.

I spoke to soon.....

It will only open when the Word program is open in the back round. When I

close Word and trying to double click on the Word file the program says

"cannot find specified file" . I can also open the file by right mouse

clicking/open with function. For some reason when Word is not open I cannot

click on the file and open automatically with that file.

Weird. So problem is not fixed after all.

Sorry.

Here is the latest. Now when I double click on the file it launches the

application that I need to run the program and gives me the error message

"windows cannot find the specified file, make sure you typed the name

correctly and try again"

With the application shell open in the backround I can then double click on

the file again and it will open up just fine.

I don't understand why this is happening and want to get by the error

message and have the applicaton open like it should without any error

messages.

Please help..... Thanks.

Hi mlsoup,

The good news is that you are not the only one experiencing this problem.

The bad news is that I am also at a loss as to how to fix it.

I am experiencing this on a brand new PC, running Vista home premium, and

Office 2007.

When using Winows explorer, I can navigate to a file, see the whole path,

only to get an error saying the path is invalid. This happens in both Word

and Excel. Rightclicking and using "open with" launches the application as a

shell, without a document. Finding the document in my "recent documents" and

clicking them will launch the saved document without problems. The files are

visible, not hidden. Like you, I am logged on as administrator. I have tried

saving files in both .xlsx and .xls format (and .docx and .doc), and both

types give me the same problem.

Help!!!

Sure, I know how many of these "work around" solution but no one will be so

fast when we just click a button. Vista is very unfriendly.

Press the Alt key while in Explorer; you get the old menus; Edit gives you

your old selections.

I know all about the Alt-key and selections from the menus, but this is NOT

the same possibility to have a simple icon on the explorer to press. So keep

your dummy answer for yourself. Sorry, I'm very very angry right now when

thinking about Vista.

I do understand what is not backed up. I haven's had a chance to proof a

backup yet but I read somewhere it is covers any file type that Vista

recognizes. It does not back up executibles, user profiles, system files,

anything on a FAT drive. The Backup Computer option creates an image file in

the form of xml ?

I keep all data (files that I produce or stuff I store) under a single

folder.

I would like to be able to:

a) keep a backup of this data folder with everything in it.

b) keep a backup of my system and program stuff (and yes, that includes user

profiles, system files etc.)

so that, if disaster should hit, I could restore both and live happily as

before, or even restore my data on a different machine altogether.

That's what I am doing now with Acronis and I had no problem figuring out

how. With Vista Backup, I am still wondering.

Besides, I need more control over what gets backed up than "pictures, music,

videos..." I need to be able to select explicitly folders and files. And I

don't necessarily want to schedule the task. I want to run it at my

convenience (after connecting my external storage device used for this

purpose).

To me, Vista Backup is pretty useless.

What happens if you click start orb> Search to open the Search window and

search from there? Or use the Search field in an Explorer window?

Curious because I've run into similar situations -searches missed by the

initial search field in the start menu (the one right above the start orb).

In fact, I sometimes see items that were deleted days ago. It's unwelcome

extra steps to use alternative starting points for search but so far it

*seems* to give better results. Could be my imagination though ;) Like you,

I'm still examining Search. There's things I definitely like about it and

things that I find frustrating...

Another thought: If you don't know already, find out where Outlook Tasks

are stored. I think they're in the .PST file but am not positive. Outlook

is your email program but it stores more than email. Tasks are not email,

they're additional data that Outlook handles. If you look at Indexing

Options> Advanced Options> File Types, you'll see that .PST is NOT included

in the index. I'm thinking if you add .PST to your indexing, that you might

be able to get that XBox search done more efficiently. NOTE: If Vista

doesn't re-index automatically in a timely manner, you can tell it to

rebuild the index manually.

I have my .pst indexed which is validated by the fact that I can find the

item I'm looking for if I use the right search phrase.

To further the test search for my Outlook task called Xbox 360 Games, I

tried searching for Xbox Games from an explorer window on my Computer and

after a couple minutes (I think it looks on non-indexed locations) it did not

find the Task item. I tried the same search from the search window for

Indexed Locations and got the same results.

I think the solution is for the indexer to prioritize individual words and

word combinations from title information such as file names, email subject,

task subject or even header information in documents. I should be able to

find a document using any single word from the title or any combination of

the words, even if they are not in the same order as the title. For example,

with the subject Xbox 360 Games for my task item, the search for Games does

not find this item - it should.

Check on the PST file. I have the default settings on my Vista setup for

this item and it is *not* included. Reason: If Vista doesn't find an item

within the indexed items, it stops the search or continues using "grep"

(slower than searching the index) -depending on your settings. Your search

results may be poor because of the secondary search phase.

If PST is changed to be included in index, your results would be straight

out of the index. Maybe not missed and maybe not so demanding with an exact

search phrase.

I'm not saying this will work but it's reasonable to expect this to

increase the "hits" search gets for certain phrases, especially ones

located outside of the normal .eml that it does index/track in Outlook's

database file (.PST). Move that stuff into the index and should be more

prioritized with the initial searches and should happen without having to

add quotes around text strings.

Create a shortcut to that folder.

Navigate to the folder, right-click on the folder, and drag to the desktop,

release, select "Create a shortcut here"

It's a separate physical drive. Anyway, I found the files. It's not

hidden, I suppose I'm just blind. :) It created a folder with the

computer name as you mentioned.

My concern is that that the backups take up quite a bit of space. My

C:\ is 320GB as is my backup D:\. I run daily backups and it seems it's

backing up the same files over and over. I thought it would only backup

files that have been modified or deleted (ie. incremental backup). If

this isn't the case, I'll run out of space on my backup 320GB hard drive

rather quickly.

I'll let it run for a bit and gather more information. If space runs

out, then I suppose I can run weekly backups instead.

Incredible -- it comes with a 325-page manual..!

For $ 25 including software.

Not even VISTA itself uses that much.

Helo MPS,

Best way to experience this is to open two Explorer windows, CTRL+click each

in the taskbar, and then right-click one of the buttons and choose Show

Windows Side By Side (or Show Windows Stacked). Now you can drag and drop

files and folders to your heart's content, and while it's no File Manager,

it's not too shabby.

Good luck

I hope this post is helpful.

This is a short version to save time,

Click Start,

From the start menu, click all programs, followed by accessories,

right click on the command prompt option,

from the dropdown menu, click run as administrator,

when the command prompt window opens,

type: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=2GB

then hit enter,

If all goes well you should see a message saying `Successfully resized the

No size adjustment in Vista. System Restore is either on or off. Part of

the reason for the change is the new "previous versions" feature. Right

click a file in Documents and select Properties. If the feature is

available for that file type, you'll see the new "Previous Versions" tab.

There is a link on that page that you can click to bring up the help topics

for this feature.

Thank you, and SharonF and JerryM for the good replies. Lots of great info.

But my question now, after I used "Clean Disk" in Accessories to delete all

my Restore Points (other than the last one): did I lose a lot of relevant

data by deleting those 30GB of restore points? In other words, if I

(hypothetically) decide to go back to my most recent Restore Point in a few

days, will I have lost necessary data to make that restore process truly

worthy? My Vista computer runs perfectly, so I don't see a problem. Might

I have one in theory anyway? Thanks again.

Hi, EW,

If you deleted all the restore points except the last one,

Your system can be restored normally using the last one.

System Restore only restores the system files,

not programs that you have installed.

One of the very good reasons to backup anything important.

It is likely that the program that the icon is associated with has been

moved, changed or uninstalled. Therefore the icon reverts to a generic

icon. If the program is still in use on the computer you can delete the old

icon and create a new shortcut on the desktop.

Sometimes the icon cache gets corrupted. At times the hard drive incurs

logical corruption. In the first instance, delete the file iconcache.db in

the following folder: C:\Users\your account name\AppData\Local. Reboot the

computer. The iconcache will be rebuilt.

In the second instance, open a command prompt in an elevated condition (run

as administrator). Type chkdsk c: /f (where c: is the drive Vista is

installed on). When asked if you want to run at the next startup type Y and

press enter. Then reboot.

I had a situation similar to the one you describe--most (but not all) of my

Quick Launch toolbar icons and some of my desktop icons changed to white,

generic rectangles. Nothing I tried fixed the icons, in fact some of them had

the "change icon" box on the properties dialog greyed out. On a hunch I

turned the User Account Control (UAC) back on (I had turned it off because it

was annoying) and the icons all popped back just like new. Try it if you also

have UAC turned off (via Control Panel\User Accounts). Hope this helps; good

luck!

Hi Dave,

You can disable the Search Index to allow Vista to use the non-index

search by default. This tutorial will show you how.

Hello,

copy the movie in the same folder as the PowerPoint presentation, and then

re-embed the file. If the movie is in the same folder, PowerPoint can always

use it correctly. So send both the presentation and the movie.

Vista Search will search the contents of all files which it knows what kind

of data is in the file. Just typing in the search box will do this. But if

the file has an unknown extension the contents are not searched {similarly

to in XP}. In the Indexing Control Panel you can control the search behavior

for each file type.

The way I do it is by typing name:*.xyz into the search box as well as my

Do the extra files contain "xyz" in the filename? Technically you can do

ext:xyz to really only match on the file extension.

Hi, kmathrn.

Now that you've got the frustration out, how about a clearer explanation of

what you are trying to do. And, step by step, HOW you are trying to do it.

An .eml file is normally an email message. WLM, for example, stores each

message that arrives in your Inbox as a separate .eml file, using a name

that WLM generates. For example, a recent message in my Inbox is named:

0BB32EA6-0000033E.eml

HOW are you trying to save your file? Are you running WLM at the time? Or

Windows Explorer? Or Microsoft Excel? Or what?

What is the name of your "stupid eml file"? Perhaps that would give us a

clue. And WHERE are you trying to save your file? Some folders, such as

C:\Program Files, are restricted by Vista because we are not normally

supposed to save anything there.

I made a folder under my program files called recipes. I have emailed myself

recipes in the past and saved them to this folder. There was a glitch in the

windows mail, I don't remember what happened, as so many glitches have

occurred with this program, and after that I cannot save anything where I

want it. I have even tried to save a word document and it goes to whatever

*eml is. I quit using windows mail and went to microsoft outlook since. At

the time, I only had maybe my email program running and internet explorer.

Nothing else. If I can no longer save recipes under my folder titled

"recipes", where and how can I make another folder to continue doing this?

Is there anyway to uninstall windows mail or get rid of this *eml file?

Thanks

Hi, kmathrn.

> I made a folder under my program files called recipes.

Aha! Problem identified!

In Vista, C:\Program Files is a special folder and we normally can't create

any subfolders under it. The exception, of course, is installation of an

application, but that requires Administrator privileges. Microsoft did not

intend for this special folder to be used except for application files, even

in Win2K and WinXP, but Vista has added UAC (User Access Control) to enforce

the rule.

You CAN, if you insist, put your recipe folder there (with Administrator

credentials), but a much better strategy is to create that subfolder under

C:\Users\kmathrn (or whatever your User name is), probably as a subfolder

under Documents: C:\Users\kmathrn\Documents\Recipes

There are many places to read about UAC. Here's an official version that

tells more than most of us want to know:

User Account Control Overview

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa906021.aspx

The reason that your saved recipe files have the .eml extension, of course,

is because you saved the email message, rather than just the text contents

of that message. That has advantages and disadvantages. When you click on

that recipe.eml file, Vista recognizes it as an email message and tries to

treat it as such. So when you click on it, Vista starts your default email

program and displays the recipe in that format. There are several ways to

convert the file's contents into a Word .doc file or a simple .txt file or

other format. If you change the format and the extension, you will have

much more flexibility in your choice of where to put it and how to deal with

it.

I'm not sure how to change a format or ext, so I guess the easy way would be

to copy and paste to a word document and save it that way. Would you agree?

By the way, I did this under XP and when I got my new computer, I just moved

it. I have several other folders I created, so I guess I need to try and

move them all. Thanks for all your help.

Hi, kmathrn.

Yes, pasting them into Word would let you save them as .doc files. If they

are plain text (and most emails are), you could paste them into Notepad and

save them as .txt files. There are many possibilities. ;

The main point in this case is to (a) change them from .eml files into

something more "generic" so that other programs can work with them, and (b)

keep them out of the restricted Program Files folder.

Good luck with your project. ;
