To
open in XP, the Vista Guide has to have some assistance.
First
download and install Microsoft Core XML Services 6.0,
then
Microsoft XPS Essentials Pack from
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/xps/viewxps.mspx
Then
download the 24.7 MB "WVPG RTM.xps" file from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=bbc16ebf-4823-4a12-afe1-5b40b2ad3725?
and
the Windows Vista Product Guide will open in Windows XP.
Worth
looking at, and perhaps purchase at a bookstore, is David Pogue's
"Windows
Vista - The Missing Manual," an 848
page O'Reilly book:
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/9780596528270/

These
big megacorps sure don't care about ethics, morality, or the finer
points
of law when they're screwing consumers and stabbing business
partners
in the back. It's rather hypocritical of their supporters to
turn
a blind eye to these activities and yet moan about consumers' lack of
ethics
when they play by the very same rules.

My
experience of the generic oem clean install was pretty similar - very
fast
and smooth. Also noticed the speed-up in the formatting.
I
don't think the upgraders have been quite so fortunate though, judging

Hi,
as long as you don't use that purchased copy of XP again as far as I am
concerned
there can't be any breach of licence. Interestingly enough it was
myself
who first published this method before dailytech. Mine was published

Depends.
If you DO already own XP, then no, it isn't. I used this
method
because when running the installation, from XP, even tho I was
REQUIRED
to install to a different drive(I was "downgrading" from XP
Pro
to Vista Home Premium), Vista wouldn't
let me install it to a
completely
empty, alternate harddrive. It kept telling me the volume
wasn't
suitable for installation. I found out that the drive you are
installing
to, must be the first drive in your system. Since this
drive
wasn't(it was a SATA raid setup, with Vista drivers
installed as
per
the installation routine, which took them fine), it wouldn' let me
install.
If I made that drive my first drive, then there wasn't any OS
to
boot up with. The funny part is, the installation can handle the
type
of install I was trying to do, IF the drives are IDE. However, if
they
are SATA drives(like all my 4 drives running in 2 raid 0 arrays),
you
cannot.
Using
the method, from dailytech, allowed to get Vista installed
properly
and was pretty much my only alternative. Thank you Dailytech.
IMO
the reason this "loophole" was probably left in, was because of
the
poorly written installation process and situations like mine.
Don't
get me wrong, I like Vista, now that
it's installed, but the
installation
process is a PITA, that doesn't need to be that way.

I'm

You
really skimped on information. The key is what driver are you using.
In

It
is more than likely because your passwords arent being remembered.
Outlook
2002 doesnt remember passwords under Vista and there will be no
Microsoft

Another
approach - is to load VPC (free from M$) and load XP on it - it is
really
fast and lastest beta works excellant with Vista. Then you can keep
you
old Nero. I have noted however; the latest version of Nero - seems to
work
faster. My machine was XP and I installed fresh copy of Vista
Ultimate
and
a full feature movie that used to take 50 to 60 minutes to burn - now
only
takes 30 to 40 minutes. Not sure if the encoders have improved or if
how
Nero integrates with Vista is better - but new Nero is faster at
encoding
on Vista - of course movies should always be burnt as slow as
possible
1x or 2x max.

Hi
Nero
6 XXXX is incompatible with Vista. I myself had this issue and ended up
biting
the bullet and upgrading to nero 7 reloaded.
From
my understanding, Nero state that 7 realoaded is the only officially
Vista
supported version. RE Zone Alarm, do you know which version yuo are
running.
On
another note, a clean install of Vista might be a more stable alternative
to
upgrading. I hope this helps.

We
have the same concerns about ZoneAlarm. It is a fine product and we
want
to use it on Vista (in our instance it is actually Longhorn, but
most
of the OS code is the same).
Zone
Alarm is far superior to Vista's firewall and I hope that ZoneLabs
will
release a compatible product. Note that you must enable Vista's
firewall
to use Remote Desktop unless there is a work around to
circumvent
this limitation.
This
is ZoneLabs' comment thus far:
Quote
This
robust security requires a deeper level of integration with the
operating
system than other security solutions. Because Vista is such a
major
overhaul to the Windows operating system, we are busy in our
development
efforts to ensure that new Vista-compatible versions of
ZoneAlarm
will live up to our and your high standards of protection. We
anticipate
delivering Vista-compatible versions in the coming months
after
January 2007 (Microsoft?s Vista planned release date). Due to the
different
needs and functionality of this new operating system, features
and
functionality on 2000/XP and Vista may differ from our current release.
Unquote
See:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/vista.jsp
I
have read that Nero 6+ is compatible with Vista. We use Nero on a
regular
basis, but haven't tried it with Vista.
I
would recommend using Nero 6+ rather than Nero 7 because Nero 7 is
reported
to have a DRM limitation that is not present in 6+

Michael,
You
can pretty well count on model-runs of roughly four years each.
For
example, automobile manufacturers usually perform major redesigns of, or
altogether
discontinue, models on a four-year cycle.
Windows
-- cars; what's the difference..?

Re: Outlook 2007 stops working on Vista

If
you're using OL with Exchange then a whole other set of issues come into
play.
If not:
1)
There have been Adobe issues with the Beta and RTM Office. I haven't
had
them. Turn off the Adobe plugin in Outlook by going to
Tools/Trust
Center
and disconnectiong Adobe from Outlook. Simply go to tools > trust
center
> add ins, and then at the bottom of the screen select COM Add-ins
from
the drop down menu box, and hit the go button. From the next screen
deselect
(remove checkmark) PDFMOutlook.
2)
Try holding down Ctrl key when you start OL--functionality used by most
should
be available in Safe Mode.
3)
Disable Outlook integration from Adobe (Add/Remove Programs, Change)
Outlook
2003 and earlier versions seemed a lot more tolerant of pst file
corruption
than 2007 is. I'd like to know why. I haven't had problems with
Office
2007 yet, including its Betas but a number of people have. Many
types
of crashes if repeated will corrupt Office 2007. (and .ost files if
you
are using exchange caching), and if Outlook doesn?t figure out and
automatically
repair it on startup, you will get into a start crash loop.
Use
the scanpst.exe and scanost.exe files (office default install
location/office12
directory, not the weird 1033 dir they used to be in), for
which
outlook must not be running (and Yahoo desktop search, and other
things
that access .psts must also be stopped). Once your .pst(s) / .osts
are
repaired, Outlook should not only start OK again, but if you have big
.psts,
it will probably run a bit better too. AN alternative for repairing
an
.ost is also renaming it (for backup purposes), and letting Outlook
recreate
it based on what is stored on exchange (you will lose almost
nothing,
what you do lose may be a couple of view settings like shortcuts to
folders)

Also,
it could be a legitimate version that they did not activate. Just a
thought

And
while I am more interested in the computer you built, congrats on the

Thanks
Tom, I am beginning the process now!
The
Vista that was installed, says Vista Ultimate, build 6000. Says it is
not
a genuine copy, and prompts for activation.
Have
no idea how they got ahold of it...
From
what I understand, they had gotten the system infested with spyware ,
(
even though I had anti spyware programs installed )then I guess thought
they
could solve the problem by installing this version of Vista.
Anyways,
back to legit XP Home it goes!

Should
be no problem. As you say, boot from a legit XP Home CD and choose
the
option to do a new install. Format any/all existing partitions and
then
install
XP Home. That will completely remove the Vista install, and
anything
else they may have put on the PC, and leave you with a new, clean,
legit
install of XP Home.

The
Sidebar gadget isn't of much use. It's not resizable and only shows
the
top
note on the stack. Right now, I just dump my notes into OneNote (via
its
SideNote capability). Nothing sits on the screen to remind me to do
things,
but at least I can keep notes somewhere.

I'm
not 100% but that's what people have reported on multiple groups. I
haven't
had to use these commands but if you do a search on "slmgr"
you'll
see
the reports. I believe it gives the extra 30 days from when you issue
the
command. Slmgr=Software licensing manager.
In
normal installation, users are allowed to extend and delay the activation
grace
timing or use the Windows Vista without activation (in trial or
evaluation
mode) for up to the 30 days for maximum of 3 times (3 months or
120
days). With Vista ReArm Unlimited Patch, you can extend the 30 days no
activation
period for unlimited times.
Supposedly
with Vista Rearm Unlimited, you can extend the activation
indefinitely.
You can set a restore point and try it by typing restore into
run>enter>click
on rstrui.

Chad
- I was aware that rearm works twice (to extend an evaluation version
to
90 days) but not three times (which gives 120 days including the original
30
days). Are you sure you can use it three times?
And
does it give an extra 30 days from the time you issue this command or
does
it extend the current activation (trial) period by a further 30 days
from
the date of expiry?
Cheers.

Sorry
Lang. I should have clarified and done it this way.
You
can type slui /rearm and get an extra 30 days 3 times.
.From
an administartive command window type "cscript slmgr.vbs -rearm"
while
in
the windows/system directory. Check with "cscript slmgr.vbs -xpr"
or
"cscript
slmgr.vbs -dlv". The "cscript slmgr.vbs -rearm" works, even
if a
product
key has been entered (and activated).

I
am seeing the same problem here. I'm running Vista 64 Business
(Volume

Here's
my setup (I'm using the default drivers that Vista x64 loaded, except
where
noted):
MSI
K8NGM2 Motherboard
AMD
Athlon 64 Dual Core 3800+
1GB
RAM (2x512 DDR in 128 bit mode)
NVidia
NForce 4 Chipset
Using
the integrated NVidia GeForce 6100 video
Using
integrated RealTek sound (and I updated that driver from the
manufacturer's
web site-WHQL certified driver)
HD:
single Seagate ST316081 2AS (160 GB SATA II)
Monitor:
Acer AL1916 (using Acer driver delivered via Windows Update)
I'm
seeing the same thing: If I command a shutdown the system never shuts
down
completely. However, a reboot works(!). I have set my power
management
to
the "Balanced" settings on the control panel.
When
I log out at night, but leave the system on, when I attempt a login
again,
the monitor displays garbage, however it is obvious the system is
accessing
the drive. After ~10 minutes, the display is still garbage, so I
hit
the reset button, and get the "Windows Did Not Successfully Shut
down"
message,
with menu options.

Re: Sound card gone

I
was going to uninstall all the Creative program items first, and when I
had
the missing .inf file message, I tried to reinstall to see if it would
exist
to uninstall it. When I did the sound card started working.
Since
it's
not broken now, I am leaving well enough alone. Thanks for the
suggestion.
I was getting ready to try it when it started working.

That
might actually work.

Resolution.
I went back to uninstall programs to see if any Creative items
remained,
and found one. I tried to uninstall it and received a missing inf
message.
Decided to reinstall and then uninstall, but when I reinstalled
it,
it worked. Still no sound card in Device Manager, but everything
works.

Hello,
Launching
the shortcut that exists here should do the trick:
"C:\Users\%USER%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick
Launch\Window
Switcher.lnk"
Where
you put your user account name where %USER% is. You can copy this path
to
the clipboard by holding down shift and right-clicking the icon for
"Switch
between windows" next to the start button, and then clicking Copy As
Path.

RE: System Meltdown after nVidia Driver Upgrade
Date:
01/13/2007 06:24:00
I
too have had a similar experience.
I
was running dual monitor config, Vista 64 Ultimate RTM, nnvidia 97.46
drivers
for a MSI 7800GTX card
I
left my home computer in the morning, came home in the evening, both
monitors
were in standby mode. I tried waking them up moving the mouse and
playing
with the keyboard but they didnt come back up.
I
rebooted, and they didnt come back up (even for the post test). THe
system
otherwise booted okay because I heard the Vista welcome sound and I
could
remote desktop to it.
ended
up getting another card today, might try at some point reflashing the
bios
of the old card to see if that gets it going again....
