Hi

- If you want to setup a DNS in each subnet, just place the DNS in each

subnet and point the clients to their local DNS (in their subnet).

-If you want to use only 1 DNS for all clients, you can also do it by

defining the same DNS server in each client, it doesn't matter in what

subnet the DNS server is, because you have a Default gateway that clients in

a different subnet than DNS server will use to contact that DNS server.

I was able to clear the errors by creating a zone that was active directory

intergrated named "." and then making it a standard zone.  Thanks for the

help.

For your external IP *.36.

If you get your external IP let say 123.123.123.36 and you did A record

mail.domain.com to pointto 123.123.123.36 and MX to mail.domain.com you

should ask your ISP to add reverse DNS entry mail.domain.com for ip

123.123.123.36.

Servers do check external IP reverse entry.

I understand that but the problem is that the IP seen by the outside

world for our e-mail server is different from the IP address in our MX

record.

Our MX record must be x.x.x.55, an IP address differnet from the WAN

IP of our firewall.

The IP address seen by another mail server receiving mail from us

would be seen as x.x.x.36.  I cannot make our MX record x.x.x.36 as

that would not allow incoming e-mail to come into our network.

So with the MX record as:

mail.ourcompany.com

x.x.x.55,

and the IP address for our e-mail server seen by remote servers as

x.x.x.36, what should our rDNS record be, x.x.x.36 or x.x.x.55?  that

isthe question.

You have servers inside your LAN? More than one? For this you need MX for

your local site?!?

>>> The Exchange server is behind a firewall and has a private IP address,

>>> so the IP address seen by other mail servers is x.x.x.36.

What does this mean?! Which "other" mail servers?

So: you have a public IP let say 133.133.133.55

You have a NAT?!? firewall and on internal network you have for example:

192.168.1.36 the IP of your Exchange?!

Port 25 is forwarded to your internal Exchange IP.

If it is so you need to create reverse DNS entry for your external IP

133.133.133.55

I did tested this thing...

Both servers dns1.adventinc.com and dns2.adventinc.com are giving me old

result.

Can you tell me SOA value of your zone?

The current SOA value is:

serial  = 2007011528

Please if you do change your record tomorow set SOA value to:

2007092401

And let us see results. :)

Use www.dnsreport.com to check your domain you have some other issues!

Use http://www.kloth.net/services/nslookup.php to check your hosts from

"outside".

Check:

http://store.manojlovic.net/videos/Microsoft/Exchange2003SP2/05%20-%20Part%20V%20-%20SMTP%20server%20name.htm -

to solve your SMTP greeting problem.

Thanks Luka, I am continuing to work on these issues.

I have fixed the open for recursive query issue and also the host name in

SMTP greeting.  Also I deleted the secondary mx record as it pointed to the

same IP as the primary per the dns report.  I will change the SOA serial

number after 12pm tonight.  Again, many thanks for your assistance !!!

Yep, dyndns is great, You can pay for a 'Custom Domain' or a free

subdomain and just CNAME your domain to that free url.

The problem is still that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is still enabled on Dial-in interface, you must have missed a step in the KB article.

Add the DisableNetbiosOverTcpip registry value for the Routing and Remote Access service

      1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

      2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RemoteAccess\Parameters\IP

      3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value to add the following registry value:

      Value name: DisableNetbiosOverTcpip

      Data type: REG_DWORD

      Value data: 1

      4. Close Registry Editor, and then restart the Routing and Remote Access service. To restart a service, click Start, point to Programs or All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services. In the Services console, right-click the service, and then click Restart.

Hello Bob,

In ASICORP01 you use the

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.80.110.32

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.80.110.6

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.80.110.32

In LL3E8385

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.81.190.53

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.81.190.6

DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.80.110.32

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.80.110.32

10.80.110.37

The point is the 10.80.x.x and the 10.81.x.x

With the Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 this is not possible. Either you have

to change the SM to 255.0.0.0 or the client ip address to 10.80.x.x

Meinolf,

I changed the subnet mask to reflect what you suggested. Same results plus

if it was the subnet mask impact more then just the IE Browser not be able to

find the server or page.

Hello Bob,

I did not realized that you where talking about 2 locations. So that was

the reason for 10.80.x.x and 10.81.x.x i assume? So how is your network setup?

Between the two locations a router and the router has also the ISP connection?

Please describe in short how it looks, also how are your DNS servers are

placed.

Best regards

Meinolf Weber

Hello Bob,

Did you have configured a forwarder on your DNS server to the ISP's DNS server?

In your configuration the clients aks the internal DNS server on your main

site for http://www.msn.com and waits for the answer. If your internal DNS

has no connection to internet or does not know where to forward the request

the name resolution stops here.

Best regards

Meinolf,

I have three other forwarders beside my Internal DNS....They all ping and

seem to respond:

199.191.128.104

12.127.16.68

206.18.195.19

and I even tried 4.2.2.2 (AT&T)

Same results

I do have three forwarders beside my Internal DNS...

199.191.128.104

12.127.16.68

206.18.195.19

All ping and appear to be working.

I even tried 4.2.2.2 (AT & T)

My Network Places does not use DNS in any way.

In TCP/IP properties, make sure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled, Client for

microsoft Networks and Files sharing is bound on all machines.

Hello Chris,

You can not do it. You have to demote the DC before you can change it to

another domain.

By the looks of the nslookup, the 10.0.0.1 looks like a router address. Is

this true or is your Windows server your router? If the domain controller is

multihomed (multiple NICs), this can cause an issue.

Registration simply works as long as the following is true:

Primary DNS Suffix matches the zone name in DNS.

Zone in DNS allows updates

DNS server IP address is the ONLY one in a machine's IP config. There cannot

be any others, such as an ISP's DNS.

To better assist, please provide an ipconfig /all of your server and a sampe

workstation. This will give us a 'picture' of your network configuration and

will help us to assist you better.

The DNS Suffix search list can only use the domain name not ip addresses

if i am not totally wrong.

Also configure the Primary DNS suffix via DHCP

Better point the DNS server to the real ip address, it works with 127.0.0.1,

but if you will use an additional DNS server in the future you will become

problems if you forget to change it.

I agree, the Search Suffix can only be a zone name.

I would also like to add Option 015 in DHCP will create that. HOwever if I

may point out, if these "clients" are truly clients in the matter of

speaking that they are joined to the domain, then the Priamry DNS Suffix

would have been automatically populated, which then the Search Suffix would

have taken on the Primary DNS Suffix.

To 'newGuy": Did you attempt to join these machines? If the intentions are

to just register without joining, follow Meinwolf's suggestions. If the

intenttion is to be part of the domain, then join them and this will all

just work.

Why don't you (also) have your DC running AD-integrated DNS?

What else does this server do? i'm presuming it's your file server.I'd have

the DC handle DNS, and then this server doesn't have to.

You'll have to - you can't have two servers with the same name (although you

can certainly rename a member server later, once you've removed the old

one).

Via what? For file/print sharing?

I think so...

Open DNS. Right-click, and you should see the option (alias). I'm honestly

not sure if this will accomplish what you wish, though - I've never tried it

as I've never needed to.

Why? If you use mapped drives, this doesn't matter (and I suggest you do use

mapped drives & a login script). It sounds like this is a home/lab network,

so for you it may not matter much, but managing a larger network will be

easier if you don't use UNC paths.

Also, as mentioned, if you're getting rid of the old server, you can disjoin

it from the domain & pull the plug, then rename your new member server to

match the old one.

Hello Wackamo,

Here a doc from MS:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825036

And also make the second server a Global catalog, otherwise clients can not

logon if the first fails:

Open Active directory site and services, go to Sites, default first site

name, servers, choose the server, right click NTDS settings, open properties

and checkmark Global catalog (check event viewer after it, in Directory service

you must find event id 1110 and 1119)

Best regards

Meinolf Weber

If you're on a LAN, I would configure both DNS servers to be Active Directory

integrated.  You should include the second DC/DNS server's static IP address

in your DHCP assignment.

Good point Mr. Weber.  I didn't think about that.
