Hello Jaycutler,

IS it a typo? allseas.global and india.allseasl.global  I mean the l behind

allseas.

Please post the complete error message and also the output from dcdiag and

netdiag from one root domain server and the new server.

Best regards

Is this the actual ipconfig /all?

If it is your Primary DNS suffix is wrong and so is your DNS Suffix search

list.

You should have only one suffix in your Primary DNS suffix, and IP addresses

are not valid DNS suffixes to search.

Are you sure when you promoted the server you didn't make it a child domain?

That is the only reason I can think of why it is loking for this record:

Open AD Domains & Trusts to see if there is a trust for special-tees.com. If

there is, is it a Child trust or an External trust?

Thank you for your reply. When I created the Domain I made it the first

Domain in a new Forest. When you look in AD Domains & Trusts, there is no

trust for Special-tees.com. The only issue I may have is the fact that the

old DC was still online when I created the new domain, so it must have

"discovered" the other one when the new Domain and Forest was created

Any idea of what record I need to put in DNS to make a proper record for the

root special-tees.com? Do I just point it at itself? What type of SRV record

must be created?

This is the record it is looking for:

> The query was for the SRV record for

> _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.special-tees.com

but I'm not sure creating it will fix anything, if it as you say no trust

exists. It should be looking for this record.

_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.rockville.special-tees.com

Run dcdiag /fix from the new DC.

Jorge,

I'm not sure if I'm clear on what you mean.  When I look at the zone itself,

it says that the zone can be scavenged after 10/2/1:00PM.  The No-Refresh and

Refresh intervals are both set to 7 days at the server level and scavenging

is enabled.  At the zone level, scavenging is enabled, the no-refresh is

showing as 3 days, and the refresh is showing as 5 days.  I have individual

records which are time stamped back on September 7th.  If I advance the date

in my test lab to November 1 (well beyond the scavenge availability date, and

record dates) and I run a manual scavenge, I get a 2502 error in the DNS log.

I'm just not sure what's going wrong here, or what logging I can turn on to

get more information.

Troy.

Hi, Are you using a conditional forwarder for any unresolved request? if so

you may be better using Root Hints instead of relying on specific Servers to

resolve your requests. I have seen issues with this before where the server

becing querries has had issues and I have also seen it where requests from

one of my clients servers have been blocked by an ISP because of the amount

of querries they have been generating.

<snippage>

At first the above may be due to network connectivity issues, but

withouth having further details it's not so easy to pinpoint; here's

what I'd suggest (assuming your DNS is using root-hints and NOT

using forwarders)

first of all ensure that the firewall filtering the traffic between your

DNS and the internet is allowing DNS traffic to flow over both UDP

*and* TCP (and not just over UDP); to do so, open a command

prompt on the DNS machine and enter the following

nslookup

server 4.2.2.2

set type=MX

hotmail.com

set vc

yahoo.com

the above tells nslookup to query the external DNS sitting on 4.2.2.2

for "MX" type records (Mail eXchangers); the first query runs on UDP

and should return the mailservers used by hotmail, the second query,

due to the "set vc" will run on TCP and should return the list of

servers

for yahoo; if the second query will fail (retry it if you get a timeout)

then

your firewall is not allowing TCP DNS queries so you'll need to revise

its configuration

next, assuming the above is ok, ensure to disable the EDNS0 queries;

some firewalls and routers (and maybe some ot the ones used by your

ISP/carrier) won't gracefully handle oversized UDP packets, so to avoid

problems, and since not so many DNS servers use/offer EDNS, better

disabling it, to do so, follow the directions you'll  find here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828263

after completing the above, ensure to restart the DNS service and the

DNS cache so that you won't have any "cached data"; at this point keep

an eye on the network trunk connecting your DNS to the internet looking

for any packet loss, congestion or the like and try to resolve them,

also,

and since you're at it, consider setting up a QoS policy to increase the

priority for DNS traffic

If your zones are Active Directory Integrated, the zone would have

replicated through AD which is what this message is telling you: "The zone

cannot be created. The zone allready exists."

Post the ipconfig /all from this server.

Subject: Re: DNS SERVER SETUP

The first think you need to do is open Network Connections in Control Panel

and disable the three NICs that have the APIPA addresses, or assign them a

valid IP address that for the network they are connected to.

The second think is to reverify the settings in the NIC that you are using.

Its gateway is its own address, which should never be done.

Another concern is whether the IP address you are aware that the IP address

you are using is not private, is routable accross the Internet and is owned

by BBN Communications, if that isn't you, or if it has not been assigned to

you by that company, change it to a private non-routable IP Address.

Hello Gopi,

On the DNS server configure the OWN ip address asDNS not an internet server.

The Internet address you use, i assume your ISP, has to be set as forwarder

on the DNS management console. Open the server properties theire and use

the tab forwarder. IF it is greyed out delete the .zone, close management

console and open it again, then you can set the forwarder. Because i see

also a second DNS address check that this also points to the first server

and to itself.

Best regards

Best regards

They are DHCP, yes... I don't have access to a client right now, but since

this problem with recursive query is random in time, are we looking for at

the right side of the problem?

DNS domain name i DHCP options is inko and DNS is 192.168.1.100

BTW: the clients does not appear in  DNS... Isn't that default behavior?

Bjørn.

Hello Bjørn,

Check out this one:

Hi!

Saw that article, but it also states: You may safely ignore the event ID

6702 Error event

Got an error working a couple of hours ago, then did a dnscmd /ClearCache

and did Clear Cache from DNSmgmt... Then it started resolving external names

again...

Suspecting DNS pollution now, but all articles states that 2003 SP2 should

be fixed!

Arghhhh! :-)

Regards,

Bjørn.

Do you use a contiguous namespace ? i.e. your AD Domain name and your

Internet Domain name are the Same ? it sounds like its an entry in your

Windows DNS which just needs to be changed.

The externally hosted website is www.xyz.co.uk and our domain name is xyz-uk.

Is that your question, if so where do I go to change the Windows DNS?

You may have a zone in DNS for your external Domain Name. Check this on your

SBS by going to Administrative Tools \ DNS and look at the Forward Zone

files. If it is the same as your external name xyz.co.uk look for a record

named www . Then edit the record accordingly.

From a Domain PC you can type nslookup in a command shell, it will should

point to the windows DNS. Then type www.xyz.co.uk which should incorrectly

resolve. if you then type www.xyz.co.uk 195.8.181.10 and hit enter it will

resolve correctly using an external DNS Server (in this case Talk Internet in

the UK) this then would demonstrate that its an internal DNS config.

I hope this helps.

DCpromo/demote is the only way. Uninstalling DNS is not necessary.

Hi

Sounds like you don't have Reverse lookup zone for that subnet, create the

Francois,

You do not need to set up a DNS server in order to host your web site and

set up a mail server.

All you need to do is to use the registrar's DNS to:

- set www.myschool.edu.gh to 212.xxx.xxx.xxx

- set the MX record for the domain to your mail server address.

Usually you can do this by logging on to your account on the registrar's web

site and editing your own DNS records. Or else you can e-mail them. But you

confuse them b asking to run your own DNS.

Hope that helps,

Anthony, http://www.airdesk.com

If you use Windows DHCP you can configure it to register devices in DNS that

do not support DDNS. You configure this from the DNS Tab of your DHCP Server

Hi

For non domain machines you must use that option because the machine doesn't

have a FQDN that relates the account with your AD Domain.

I hope you won't take this the wrong way, but unless you're *really* sure of

what you're doing, and unless you have a sufficiently robust infrastructure

(including *two* separate DNS servers, among other things) I don't recommend

that you do this. What's the justification? You can have your domain's

nameservers managed by a hosting company with a datacenter full of kick-a__

servers for you, at minimal cost. Most will let you manage your own DNS via

a web-accessible control panel.

That said, I doubt most people would recommend running a Windows server for

this purpose. BIND is probably more common. I'm not a DNS guru, so

corrections welcome.

Thanks for the input.  I agree with your comment.  I'm not quite sure why

I'm doing this.  I think just so I can learn DNS much better.  We seem to be

having several DNS issues lately and I wanted to see if hosting it ourselves

would make it easier.  Not sure on that.

Thanks!

Don't do this with a domain you're using for any other purpose then!

I highly doubt it, especially as you've admitted you're not sure what you're

doing with DNS. It would probably be better to iron out the problems you're

having specifically. You might post more details to see if someone can help.

Are you referring the clients' A and PTR records?

This best way to solve the issue of the same client having multiple PTR

records for different IPs is to stop clients from registering in DNS and

setup a Windows Server 2003 DHCP server to register for all clients.

1) Security, security, security.

2) You won't likely have enough hardware/bandwidth resources to run/support

it,

3) 2k/XP/Vista supports only 5 or 10 inbound connections, yaddayaddayadda.

(you did say "worksstation" although you are in a server NG)

4) Security.

5) IIS is not the world's best webserver

6) With a residential broadband account, you may be in violation of your

agreement with the ISP

7) Yaddayaddayadda

As a learning experience, it's fine - but don't open it up to the public.

Hosting accounts are *cheap* nowadays.
