Find out which device is using public IP address

Postby chicagotech » Tue Nov 29, 2011 5:12 pm

Situation: the client has over 30 public IP addresses. They can ping all IP addresses, but they don't think they use all of them. They would like to find out which devices are using them.

Resolution: 1. Using ARP to find each device MAC address.
2. Cisco command: show mac-address-table address xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx to locate the port the device connecting to. This link may help too: How to: find the Switch and Port You are connecting to

3. Finally, they find they have PepLink, a Dual-WAN Router manage all Public IP addresses. From the Peplink DNS manage, they figure out which IP addresses are available and free the unused IP address from the Peplink.they can't ping them any more.
