"no network provider accepted the network path" In

Postby garyoNC » Sat Jan 13, 2007 11:33 am

I have three laptops that have this problem. They are from two different customers. They all see the Internet, both browsing and e-mail. They cannot connect to any computer or server on the local network. Any ideas?

Thanks
Gary

Have you check these troubleshooting?

Yes I did look at these and they do not have anything to do with my problem. I know that if I reformat and reload windows it will work just fine. The problem is on the local laptop as the problem follows as I physically move the laptop from network to network. I do not get the error 67.

We need more details to help. What do you receive if you use command "net view"? Can you ping shared computer by IP in the LAN?

No I cannot ping any local computer except the gateway. When connecting to the Internet all is normal and works fine, including browsing, email, and Internet printing. I can get no response for anything local. It is like the computer does not exist on the local network. Local printing seems to work fine if the printer is attached to an HP print server with its own IP address. Also it does not matter if DHCP is used or not. When I run the "net view" command I get the "server list for this workgroup is currently not available" message. I have tried everything, unloading and reloading all networking components, sfc, changing most options in the advanced tab for TCP/IP.

If you can't ping, I would check the firewall first. The "server list for this workgroup is currently not available" could be the computer browser issue. These troubleshooting may help,

There is no running firewall and ICF is not used. I did follow some of the other suggestions you mentioned but no luck.

I re-formatted one of the laptops and set it up the way it will work at the customers site and it works just fine on my network. I can see everything on my loacl network and ping anything.

Bob,

I wish I could have messed around with this problem a little longer but my customer needed his laptops back because they were heading to a conference. I just can't stand not knowing how to fix some things. I guess it should be added to Microsoft's list of XP Pro bugs. I can't imagine there are more than about 10 gazillion of them on the list so far!

Thanks so much for your time and effort in trying to help me.

Gary,

In a case like this one, we do the same, reformatting or re-installing. The reason I like to troubleshoot it is that we will learn and will fix it right way next time.

Thankk you for posting chicagotech.net.

For anyone who may have the same problem,
I had this problem. I have a laptop and a desktop (and a router) and for some reason the laptop cannot access or even ping the desktop; the desktop can access the shares on the laptop with no problem. I also have a VPN Client on both machines; and the it turned that out the problem was from the VPN Client on the desktop. After I uninstalled it, the problem was resolved.

The problem is not actually because of VPN. It happened with me after I instructed Windows to remember username/password that I use to access a VPN shared resource.

Hope that is helpful.

The CISCO VPN client is notorious for this behavior. It ccontains a firewall component that is installed with the VPN client. You need to disable this firewall, or configure it appropriately so that it does not block traditional Netbios and SMB ports on your LAN subnet.

Thanks for the info guys, but none of the PCs that I have seen with this problem ever had any kind of VPN software setup. They are all just basic IP connected PCs through a broadband network connection.

From reading your comments earlier, it is still possible the issue is firewalll related (the gist of the VPN case).

However, the more likely case is that File and Printer Sharing and the Workstation service are not bound to TCP/IP.

1. In the Properties sheet for the connection, make sure that both Client for Microsoft Networking, and File and Printer Sharing are checkmarked (enabled). These are the network providers that Windows is complaining about.

2. Then make sure that there are no rogue LSP providers. The following is often necessary after the installation of Service Pack 2 of XP, and when installing Microsoft Windows Defender for the first time as well:

Start, Run, cmd

netsh int it reset resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset

Wait for a prompt that a restart is needed. Reboot the computer.

3. Start, Run, services.msc

Check that the Server service is started and set to Automatic in its startup desposition.
Check that the Workstation service is started and set to Automatic in its startup despostiion.
