Only able to ping 1 way but no firewall turned on

Postby guest » Mon Aug 13, 2012 1:53 pm

I've had a connectivity issue arise on my home network sometime over the last 6 months, but I'm not sure exactly when it started or what triggered it. I have several computers and other network devices connected to a Linksys WRT56G wireless router/gateway. Two of my laptops are using DHCP provided by the router and my personal desktop computer has a static IP. All three of these computers are work group have connectivity with one another. I have another static IP desktop computer that I use for work that I cannot ping from any of the other computers. About this computer:

•It can ping my other computers
•It is on a my companies Domain not a work group
•It uses a Cisco VPN client to connect to my work's VPN but I have the VPN network adapter disabled for connectivity tests
•Windows firewall is turned off
•It has McAffee ePolicy Orchestrator installed. I don't know exactly what this is.
•It has Trend Micro Office Scan installed but I have stopped the associated services.
•It behaves the same on a static IP as on DHCP
What's really throwing me off is that at one point after I first set everything up, I was using remote desktop to work on this desktop computer from the living room. How can I troubleshoot this?

I think you have some kind of firewall service running. If you port scan yourself the firewall may not not take into account loop back so these ports appear to be opened. But outside your own adapter it may block access.

you are correct. I went with your theory and decided to check again w/ our network guy and he assured me that the McAfee that is installed does not have a firewall. He poked around and did most of the same stuff I did and ended up stumped. This morning I decided to uninstall another service I'm running just to see if it was causing problems. As I was closing things out to restart, I right click the Cisco VPN Client in the system tray and BAM..."Statefull Firewall (Always On)", in plain sight, was checekd. Unchecking this option fixed the problem.

I had seen this menu item before and all liklihood, clicked it at some point and forgotten about it, but it never dawned on me that when it said "Always On' it meant it. It totally threw me off that when I had closed the VPN client before, its firewall remained turned on. Thanks for everyone's help and sorry for the misinformation.
