Exchange 2007 mailbox database issue

Postby guest » Wed Jul 02, 2014 8:26 am

One of our client is running Exchange 2007. The total mailbox database is about 400GB. Their backup storage is 500GB. They clean over 100GB mailbox spaces. However, the full backup is using 400GB. Why?

I found two comments online: 1. Exchange will use that space before further increasing the PHYSICAL size of the DB.

2. The store on disk never shrinks unless you do an offline defrag.

What does "Exchange will use that space before further increasing the PHYSICAL size of the DB" mean?

For the “Exchange will use that space before further increasing the PHYSICAL size of the DB”, the space those purged data used to use will be marked as White Space. When some new data is going to be wrote on this database, these White Space will be used firstly.

If we do an offline defragment on this database, these White Space will be remove from the database.
