Remove Exchange 2007 but keep SMTP service

Postby chicagotech » Tue Sep 01, 2015 11:14 am

Q: We have migrated all our mailboxes to Office 365. Would like to remove the Exchange 2007 from our system. However, we would like to keep SMTP service on Exchange for web app to send email. until we can midgrade it to the cloud. What are the procedure to remove Exchange 2007 but keep SMTP service?

A: Microsoft Exchange Transport services (New SMTP service) is service that used for mail transfer protocol (Replaced SMTP services), it is started automatic by default, when deployed Hub Transport and Edge Transport. This is because Exchange use the SMTP feature of Windows Sever for mail flow.

However, I would like to explain that if we uninstall Mailbox Role and Client Access Role, the remaining Hub Transport Server does not make sense.

This is because that in Exchange mailbox is stored in Mailbox Server and mailbox access the server is via Client Access Server.

Thus, if you want to remove Exchange and use the SMTP service to send email, please uninstall the Exchange Server(remove all Exchange roles) and then configure this server as a SMTP server.(it is not associated with Exchange Server).

Fore detailed steps to configure a SMTP server, please refer to the following blogs:

Also please refer to these pages

The support way to remove the legacy Exchange 2007 server is via Add Remove Programs.

You could refer to the following official article as your reference:

I would like to clarify that Microsoft Exchange Transport services (New SMTP service) is service that used for mail transfer protocol (Replaced SMTP services), it is started automatic by default, when deployed Hub Transport and Edge Transport.
