SMTP virtual Server can be used to relay incoming mail

Postby guest » Wed Nov 04, 2015 6:04 pm

There is an internal student management server that needs to send mail to parents' email addresses. There is no internal email server. Can I configure the SMTP Virtual Server in Windows Server 2012 R2 to allow relaying to any external domain? It does not accept domain *, although I can specify *.com, *.net. *.org, etc. I see that the SMTP Virtual Server can point to a smarthost. Can it be configured to send mail using public MX records?

According to my understanding, you want to know if SMTP virtual Server in Windows Server 2012 R2 can be used to relay incoming mail to the receiver.

Based on my experience, you can do that with SMTP virtual Server in Windows Server 2012 R2.

You can use the option user DNS to route outgoing mail instead of Forward all mail to smart host.

If you use DNS to route outgoing mail, the SMTP connector uses DNS to resolve the IP address of the remote SMTP server, and then it delivers the mail.

The smart host handles DNS resolution and delivers the mail.

The configuration is similar described in the following blog except using smart host:
