How to disable Tunnel adapter 6TO4 DNS

Postby chicagotech » Fri Nov 17, 2017 11:33 am

One of our clients is running Windows 2012 R2. The client is using Tunnel adapter 6TO4 DNS which is Public IP address as shown the screenshot. Why and how can we disable it?

In my experience, 6to4 address will be generated when there is public IPv4 address and the computer has Internet connectivity. 6to4 is generated automatically referring to the public IPv4, and the DNS of 6to4 is the same with the DNS of public IPv4 network adapter.

If the client requires the 6to4 IPv6 address and wants not registering IP on public DNS, please change the DNS settings on the public IPv4 adapter to using internal DNS server.

If 6to4 address is not required in clients environment, you can
•either remove the 6to4 adapter in Device Manager
•or disable 6to4 in referring to the following steps: •Run “regedit” to open registry editor
•Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters\
•Create\configure DWORD value “DisabledComponents” as 0x01 to disable all IPv6 tunnel
•Or 0x02 to disable 6to4 tunnel interface

I am confused. The server doesn't have the public IPv4 adapter and the IPv4 adapter is pointing to the server self private IP address.

As I know, the 6to4 IPv6 address is automatically generated when following two conditions are met: 1) the computer has public IPv4 address. 2) the server has Internet Connectivity.[1]

Could you please provide the full version if “ipconfig /all”?

Note: To protect privacy, you can put the result of “ipconfig /all” in private message.

Disabling IPv6 fixes the problem. Thank you.
