Q & A: After setup rpc/http, pop3 doesn't work

Postby chicagotech » Fri Feb 02, 2007 10:45 am

q: I followed MS articles to setup OWA, Activesync and RPC over HTTP on an Exchange 2003 for one of my client. OWA and ActiveSync work great, but the RPC over HTTP doesn't. Now the problem is not only rpc/http, but also POP3 (pop3 mail doesn't work and we can't restart exchange pop3 service). We tried to reboot the server, but that doesn't fix the problem. I can’t telnet the exchange server port 110 locally.

The only thing I think may impact on pop3 issue is I followed this instruction: “In the Authentication Methods window, under Authenticated access, select the check box next to Basic authentication (password is sent in clear text) and click OK. You receive the following message:
The authentication option you have selected results in passwords being transmitted over the network without data encryption. Someone attempting to compromise your system security could use a protocol analyzer to examine user passwords during the authentication process. For more detail on user authentication, consult the online help. This warning does not apply to HTTPS(orSSL) connections.
Are you sure you want to continue? “

I remember it also mentioned to change ports automatically. How can I restore the POP3 port 110 so that the users can use pop3 mails?

a: Switch back to the settings to the before and re-do the rpc/http.
