WSS: Make sure the path or Internet address is correct

Postby guest » Thu May 22, 2008 9:21 pm

When your client try to open Explorer View to view documents in a document
library, he/she receives the following error message:
Cannot find 'file://siteurl/sites/Main/Shared%20Documents' Make sure the
path or Internet address is correct.

Based on my experience, the problem may occur if the web client was failing
because the root site was extended but not a valid Sharepoint site.

Please browse to the root: http://servername/ and http://servername/sites
to see if you get the following message:

"The Web site that is referenced here is not in the configuration database."

The managed paths in the SharePoint Admin site showed that the (root) was
in the managed path as a "wildcard inclusion". It turns out the Explorer
View will fail when running on Windows XP with the web client service when
the root site is a wildcard include and the nest level (sites) is also a
wildcard include.

The resolution is to delete the root wildcard inclusion, create an explicit
inclusion for the root and create a top level site at the root. Please take
your time to make these changes and reboot the client to see if the
Explorer View windows renders correctly even when web client service is
turned on.
