Q: How do you backup CRM 4? Where is the CRM data? Should we use SQL backup to backup CRM?

A: If you will recover from any scenario, you must back up all needed
information and store a copy offsite. A back-up plan should be created and
rehearsed for all Microsoft Dynamics CRM components and services to make
sure that, if a disk or other failure occurs, the maximum amount of data is
recoverable. Back-up requirements vary according to the servers involved.

up, restore, and provide data recovery for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0.

For the "out-of-the-box" Microsoft CRM Server, it is not necessary to make
any backups of the services. The Microsoft CRM server can be reinstalled
and connected to existing databases in the event of a failure.

If you have customized your Microsoft CRM server by adding fields,
modifying forms, modifying reports, or adding reports, it is important to
keep backups of these customizations so they can be restored if necessary.

The following steps will guide you through exporting your customizations:

1. On the Microsoft CRM server, go to Start | Programs | Microsoft CRM |
Deployment Manager.
2. Once Deployment Manager is open, right-click on Deployment Manager and
select All Tasks | Export Customizations.
3. Choose the directory where you will save the file and give the file a
name. Be sure to save it in an XML format.
4. Click Finish to export your customizations.

If you have customized your Microsoft CRM server by adding Workflow
processes, it is important to keep backups of these processes, so they can
be restored if necessary.

**It is a good practice to export your customizations and worklflow
rules/processes after each change. Be sure to store the XML file in several
locations (both on and off site). You should also save your modified or new
Crystal reports in multiple locations.
