Can't SSH or telnet to EqualLogic SAN

Postby chicagotech » Wed Jun 17, 2009 11:12 am

Q: I have 3 PS5000 SANs. I have a problem to access one SAN using SSH or telnet. If I use putty to access it using SSH, I receive Network error: Connect refused. If I use telnet command line, I receive Connect failed. I can access other two SANs without any problems. I can ping the SAN. I have tried all Ethernet ports on the SAN. The SSH and Telnet are enabled. I have tried to disable and re-enable them. any suggestions?

A: In most cases, this problem cause by the "inetd" service is not running. To do that, login to the array using the serial console cable. Login as grpadmin, and run the following commands:

chicagotech> support exec /bin/bash
bash-2.05# ps waux

Look for "inetd". If it is not present, run the following commands:

bash-2.05# cd /etc/rc.d
bash-2.05# ./inetd stop
Process already stopped
bash-2.05# ./inetd start
bash-2.05# exit
ArrayName>

Here are the example and result:

Re: Can't SSH or telnet to EqualLogic SAN

If "inetd" is present or above sugegstion doesn't fix it, please proceed to the following steps:

To restart netmgtd, you will need to be logged in as root. Usually, you will be able to telnet/ssh in as root, but if that's not available, you will need to go to the console serial port and log in as root there.

Then just enter this command:

# eqlinit restart-snap netmgtd

This command will restart the daemon and produce a core file, which can be picked up with a diag report for analysis. It's been suggested that the restart-snap is more effective than a regular restart as well. If that cannot stop the process, you could try to send the process ID a "kill -9". Or give up on the core file, and just "eqlinit stop netmgtd" followed by "eqlinit start /usr/bin/netmgtd".

If that does not appear to help (you can test via Telnet to see if the CLI is working again), restart MgmtExec similarly:

# eqlinit restart-snap MgmtExec

Please do not restart MgmtExec unless you have verified that netmgtd did not resolve the issue.
