RDP Licensing Protocol Error in WIN 7

Postby guest » Wed Feb 29, 2012 5:39 pm

I have been running an RDP Web session to access our companies computers from home on a Windows 7 64 BIT system for several months and since we put in a new TS License server the other day I can no longer connect. I am getting 'The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol'

I have performed all the 'fixes' I have been able to find including the removal of the HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\MSLicensing key without any resolution. I restarted the computer after removing the key and it would not recreate the key after trying to connect the first time as it should.

I was able to connect using a method of running IE as an administrator, and the key was recreated, but it would not work again when trying to run it as a normal user.

This is not a solution for our users since they cannot run it under admin credentials nor will it run from a shortcut. In order for this to work you must run IE as an admin each time you want to use the connection.

I have already spent over 8 hours trying to resolve this and read every post on several forums regarding this issue. I was able to get our WinXP and Vista (32BIT) users fixed, but cannot get this to work on the Windows 7 (32 or 64) machines.

If anyone has a real solution to this please let me know.

I suggest you temporary disable the antivirus programs on Windows 7 computers. If the issue persists, please open IE, click Tools->Manage Add-ons. Disable all add-ons that are from your security programs.

If the issue still occurs, follow the steps below to reset IE settings.

1. Click Start, please type “inetcpl.cpl” (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and press Enter to open the Internet options window.
2. Switch to the Advanced tab.
3. Click the "Reset Internet Explorer Settings" button.
4. Click Reset to confirm the operation.
5. Click Close when the resetting process has finished.
6. Uncheck the "Enable third-party browser extensions" option in the Settings box.
7. Click Apply, click OK.

If it does not work either, you may try to following method.

1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
2. On the Security tab, click Trusted sites.
3. Click Sites.
4. In the Add this Web site to this zone box, type the address for the licensing server. If the server (or your computer) is not configured to use SSL, click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.
5. Click Add, and then click OK.
6. Click OK.

If the above suggestions do not help, I suggest you turn off Protected Mode in IE.

I was able to repair it by going through and launching MSTSC as administrator. I only had to do it once and the keys were regenerated. After that it worked just fine. I can see the problem where if this happens on a global scale, trying to get everyone to run it as an admin will be a bit of a pain. I can only think of scripting to have it all run once.

I ran into this same issue on Win7 64 on a server I had connected to previously. Even though my user account is an Admin on my machine, I still had to right-click the Remote Desktop shortcut and "Run as administrator". This seemed to work after I had deleted the MS Licensing reg key.

so, here is what I did:

Delete the MS Licensing key

Restart my PC

Run Remote Desktop *as Administrator*
