Error 812 with Win 2008 VPN

Postby guest » Thu Oct 11, 2012 8:55 am

One of my users is unable to connect to our Win 2008 VPN. Whenever he tries to connect it attempts to authenticate and he gets an error 812. I've seen other reports of this problem but haven't found a solution.

He's running Vista Business. The VPN connection seems to be properly configured. When I use his laptop and connection with my account it works, but he gets an error.

There don't seem to be any strange settings on his account. It looks identical to mine, except for some of the group membership. I've even tried adding him to the same admin groups I belong to but it doesn't help.

Does anyone have any troubleshooting advice?

from what you have written it looks like a authentication issue to me.
Can you help me to understand how you connect please

are you using PPTP? L2TP? IPSEC with Certificates? Pre-shared key?
has this ever worked for this user?
does it work when he connects with a XP Client? does it only fail on this specific computer ?
what happens when you create a new user in AD and try that account to connect, does that work?
are you using Radius Server (IAS) or maybe ISA in front?

has the Client have Vista SP1 installed?

if not, can you check if it works when you install SP1 please:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... 3d06d12674

Error 812 means:

The connection was prevented because of a policy configured on your RAS/VPN server. Specifically, the authentication method used by the server to verify your username and password may not match the authentication method configured in your connection profile. Please contact the Administrator of the RAS server and notify them of this error.

please verify that you have the correct settings on Server and Client side and if it still fails share with the NETSH RAS logs of the Client:

1. Open an command prompt with admin privilege

2. Netsh ras set trac * en

3. Repro the scenario (try to connect to the server)

4. Netsh ras set trac * dis

5. Send all the files located at %Windir%\tracing\ folder

and please describe the situation as detailed as possible so we can help you better,

Thanks
