VPN Error 720 and Event ID 20253

Postby guest » Sat Jul 27, 2013 7:06 pm

We have Windows VPN on Windows 2008 R2. All XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8 VPN clients works fine except one Windows 8. When attempting to establish the VPN, the Windows 8 Laptop receives "Error 720: A Connection to the remote computer could not be established". On the VPN Server these is the Event ID 20253 with this description: The user: %1 connected to port: %2 has been disconnected because no network protocols were successfully negotiated. How do you troubleshoot this error?

From your description, one client can't establish the VPN connection. If I have misunderstood anything, please feel free to let me know.

From the symptom, it assumes that the problem happens on the client side. First I would suggest you to reset the PPTP and L2TP WAN miniport with running the following commands one by one in an elevated command prompt:

Netcfg -u MS_L2TP

Netcfg -u MS_PPTP

Netcfg -l %windir%\inf\netrast.inf -c p -i MS_PPTP

Netcfg -l %windir%\inf\netrast.inf -c p -i MS_L2TP

Then restart your computer. If the problem persists, please disable the firewall temporarily and check the result. Also I need to confirm if you use the PPTP.

1. reset the PPTP and L2TP WAN miniport doesn't fix it.

2. I also try to turn off the firewall. That doesn't fix the problem.

3. We are using PPTP VPN.

4. I have tried both wired and wirelss. All have the same problem.

5. I also tried clean boot.

Any other suggestions?

Please open the device manager, click View and select Show hidden device. Then check the status of network adapters. You need to make sure all of them work properly. Also I suggest you to re-install TCP/IP on the client.

1. device manager hidden device doesn't show any problems.

2. I have tried NIC old and latest driver.

3. I have removed and re-installed the NIC.

However, after I uninstalled the PTPP using this command: netcfg -u MS_PPTP, I still see the WAN Miniport (PPTP) as shown below. Could this be a problem?

It assumes that the adapter and protocol are fine on the client. I need to check the VPN configuration on the client. You can make a screenshot for security and network tab in VPN connection. Also please provide the network trace on both client and server.

a. Download Microsoft Network Monitor Tool from the following link and install it on the client and the server. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... 88333d062f

b. Start Network Monitor at "Start" ->"Program"-> "Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4" -> "Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4" on the client and the server.

c. On the left-panel, select LAN connection on the server and select corresponding connection on the client.

d. Click "Tools", click "Options", switch to the "Capture" tap, and set the "Temporary capture file size (MB)" to 200 on the client and the server.

e. On the VPN server and the client, run the following command under the command prompt to enable RRAS tracing.

netsh ras set tracing * enabled

f. Click "New Capture", click "Start" on the Capture menu in the two Network Monitor windows.

g. Now from the client, try to establish the wireless connection to reproduce the problem.

h. Once the problem occurs, click "Stop" on the Capture menu on the client and the server, and click "File"->"Save as" to save the captured files.

i. Run the following command under the command prompt on both the VPN server and the client to disable RRAS tracing.

netsh ras set tracing * disabled

j. The tracing files are saved at %systemroot%\tracing folder. On both the VPN server and the client, please compress the "tracing" folder to a zip file.

k. Please send the network traces and the RRAS tracing logs to me via email. v-nicwu@microsoft.com

Note: Please inform me the client’s and server’s IP address.
