Computer logoff automatically with Event ID 26

Postby blin » Sun Mar 15, 2015 8:48 pm

I always keep my computer (running Windows 7) on so that I can access it remotely. Sometimes, the system logs off automatically and I loss unsaved documents. Whenever that happens, I have Event ID 26 logged:

Log Name: System
Source: Application Popup
Date: 1/17/2015 2:37:47 AM
Event ID: 26
Task Category: None
Level: Information
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Description:
Application popup: Idle timer expired : Session has been idle over its time limit.
Logoff will start in 2 minutes.
Press any key now to continue session.

The Remote session time limit is not configured. Why?

Before addressing the issue, I wonder if the computer Windows 7 is in a domain? If so, does the issue occur on other computers in the same domain?

This behavior occurs if a policy setting enforces a time limit for idle Remote Desktop sessions. If an active session has not received user input for the time that is specified in the policy setting, the session disconnects. Pressing a key closes the warning message that you receive two minutes before you are disconnected.

Since this is a Windows 7 workstation, you can verify and edit the group policy in this machine to avoid the time limit.

1. Run gpedit.msc

2. Locate to: Computer Configuration/Administrative Template / Windows Components/ Remote Desktop Services / Remote Desktop Session Host /Session Time Limits

3. Disable the below policy:

a. Set time limit for disconnected sessions.

b. Terminate session when time limits are reached.

c. Set time limit for active remote desktop services sessions.

Thank you for the tip. I find the problem is the Session in the user Properties has idle session limit settings. Changing the settings to never fix the problem.
