Move RD Connection Broker Role

Postby guest » Wed Nov 04, 2015 6:00 pm

We have a small 2012 R2 Remote Desktop system consisting of a Broker server and 2 RDSH servers. Initially trying to keep the system compact the server hosting the Broker role also ran a SQL database for a 3rd party application and acted as a file server for user data.

We've now decided to break these roles apart and have created a separate file server for user data in order to leave the SQL database on it's own server for performance reasons. I'd like to move the Session Broker role across to the new server as well (to remove the associated Windows Internal database instance from alongside SQL) but I cannot seem to find a procedure to do this.

Searching the internet for suggestions has come up with nothing other than someone saying the current Broker needs to be removed from the domain and we would need to effectively create the Desktop collection again. Because the current server is running SQL I obviously don't want to do that, especially as this system is required 24/7 and a large maintenance window is impossible.

Can anybody assist me with this, is it possible to re-locate the Session Broker role to another server without major surgery?

As far as I know, the RDCB role is not supported for migration unless you configured your environment as high availability. It says, you need to configure your current rdcb as HA, add your destination server to the HA, then remove the old server from HA, and the destination server will continue to work just like migration. For more detailed information, please refer to the following article:

Remote Desktop Services: Migrate Remote Desktop Services Role Services

If HA is impossible, as your description above, you have to remove the old server and then reinstall the RDCB on the new server. Thanks for your understanding.
