vista name resolution over ip

I am connecting my laptop remotely over ip using vpn to a desktop pc workgroup
can not resolve name to ip addresses. can print using ip address can ping both directions using ip address,
can not ping anything in either direction by name.
disabled ip6, firewalls, enabled netbios over tcpip. both machines use home premium vista
any ideas?

If you have server, assign DNS and WINS to teh client VPN.

If you don't have the server, try to use lmhosts file for the name resolution. These search results may help.

network has no server. lmhosts suggestion worked. All applications work! I still can't see the remote devices on the network map via control panel... but thats a different thread
