Hi!!

When I install the SP2 on my Small Business Server 2003, the
instalation process give me an error and undo the instalation. Then I
restart the server and after the logo of Windows 2003, when is
switching to next screen (windows screen with the message 'applying
computer' setting and log in) the system give me a blue screen without
any message (only with the typical message that may be it's a hardware
problem bla bla bla).

If I try to open Safe Mode or Last Know Good Configuration I have the
same problem. It's possible to use the System Restore Point if I
cannot access to a command prompt?

What can I do, please?

I would appreciate your comments very very much.

Thanks,
Pop

SBS 2003 SP2 known issues

Postby chicagotech » Tue Jul 24, 2007 2:47 pm

Based on Microsoft, SBS 2003 SP2 has the following known issues

1. For both Standard and Premium:
Missing Help and Support service
R2 patch approve console has error on approval

2. For Premium with ISA Server 2004
Networking issues including NAT and VPN connectivity programs, Outlook not connecting, RPC errors, etc.

3. If after installing SP2 you notice that your Vista clients are slower to resolve network resources.

4. After removing Windows 2003 Service pack 2 on Small Business server 2003 you may find that some of your management consoles will not function due to the removal of MMC 3.0.

Finished installing SP2 earlier this evening, after failures last week due to
too many cab files. Followed the manual method on the Blog (i.e., moved
kb*.cat files, etc.)

Everything seemed to go fine, and was propted to reboot at the end. Now the
Server cannot reboot, and keeps restarting itself. I've tried booting in
Safe Mode, but that does not help.

Any suggestions? I've got to have the Server back up and running by
morning, or I'll have a dozen employees hanging out with nothing to do!
Thanks,

Looks like I am back in business, and with over 6 hours to spare! :-) The
repair from the SBS CDs got the server up and running again, then I was able
to successfully install SP2. All the users, shares and printers are there,
and the shared data drives are fully accessible.

All-in-all, a 7 hour ordeal from start to finish. Which is sort of what I
expected when I started this evening. It's just that I let my guard down
when it looked like the initial SP2 install was gong okay... :-)

Hopefully it will be another year before the next SP, so I can rest easy for
a while. Thanks for your help, everyone!

Thanks for posting back.

I think you had better restart server before uninstall SP2, But you can try
to uninstall SP2 without restarting. Now I have no condition to test, Please
just test to see what's the result? If not work, then restart to uninstall
SP2.

Uninstalling SP2
It is possible to uninstall SP2 only if it was installed as an update to an
existing operating system. It is not possible to remove only SP2 if you
installed it as part of an integrated installation. In addition, you can
only uninstall the last service pack that you installed. For example, if
you install SP1 and then you install SP2, you can only uninstall SP2.

By default, backup files are created during the installation so you can
remove SP2. Unless you specified the /nobackup option when installing SP2,
then you can remove SP2 using Add or Remove Programs or the command prompt.

Important:
If you remove SP2, a dialog box displays a list of the applications that
you installed after you installed SP2. If you continue, these applications
might not work correctly. Multiple descriptions of some applications might
appear instead of a single generic description. You can ignore these
additional descriptions.

To remove SP2 using a command prompt

1. Open a command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER (Option
can be any option listed in the following table):

%systemroot%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\Spuninst.exe /Option

2. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

I was installing Microsoft patches based on Trend Micro recommendations, when
I saw a tab that asked if I wanted Microsoft to scan my server for needed
updates. It came back that I needed Windows Server 2003 SP2. My operating
system is technically Windows Server 2003 for SBS w SP1. Is the upgrade to
SP2 applicable to my SBS? Why wouldn't this have been installed by Dell
before shipping since it seems SP2 is not very recent? Finally, should I
expect any problems after making this change? Better yet, should I make this
change?

Hi steves,

Thanks for posting here.

From the description, I understand the issue is that you are not sure
whether you should install SP2 or not. If I am off base, please don't
hesitate to let me know.

Bottom line, there's no rush in getting this service pack on your
boxes.because there are some known issues after applying the SP2

you can uninstall SP2 via add/delete program or command line

There are reported issues with SP2 on SBS 2003 especially if you have ISA
installed. Many of us are holding off until the dust settles better although
certainly there are also successful installs of it as well.
