SBS backup wizard cannot find the tape device.

Postby chicagotech » Thu Jul 19, 2007 10:31 pm

Hello James,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

From your description, I know that you installed HP StorageWorks Ultrium
920 Tape Drive, but SBS backup wizard cannot find the tape device. If I am
off-base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my experience, please take the following steps to narrow down this
issue:

Step 1: The problem may be caused by tape device, please check if the
device is in the HCL list.

More info:

Installed Tape Device Is Not Recognized by Removable Storage Manager
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... US;Q216328

Step 2: Does the tape device appear correctly in the Device Manager window?

Step 3: Please uninstall and then reinstall the tape drive, what's the
result? If possible, please install the latest tape driver.

Step 4: Based on my research, some third party backup tools may cause the
problem. Please make a clean boot to make sure the problem is not caused
third party software:

1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter.
2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable
All third party Services.
3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items.
4. Click OK and choose Restart.
5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs.
6. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
of this issue.

Step 5: If possible, please check whether the problem occurs with other
tapes.

Also, you can install tape device driver any time, not just at initial
setup.

Hope the suggestions help.

I am waiting for your update.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)
