DFS replicating only one way

Postby guest » Thu Jul 29, 2010 12:05 pm

Hi Everybody,

We are having an issue with DFS that I cannot seem to find a resolve for. Here are all the stats

we have 2 x Servers running Windows Server 2008. Both have DFS setup on them. The servers have 4 x replication groups. 3 of the 4 replication groups are functioning correctly. The 4th replication group has 2 replicated folders that are not functioning correctly. The other folders are fine.

The problem with these replicated folders is that files are replicating only 1 way.

I have performed the following Troubleshooting Steps:

Ran a DFS Health Report - the report came back with no errors but displays a backlog of files to be transferred on the two failed directories
Looked through the event logs on both servers - There are no entries in the log thatprovide any clues
Checked to see if quotas were the issue - No quotas set on either server
Checked the files to see if the temporary attribute was set - it wasn't
Investigated the Debug logs on the Server that does not distribute files - Found the following items:
+ rdcDesired:1 connId:{D285DCBF-5FA7-46E3-AC91-502D35BB6D76} rgName:DEPARTMENTAL

Can anybody shed any light on what these messages in the logs mean and a suggested course of action?

I am inclined to recreate the replicated folder in DFS to see if that resolves the issue but I cannot seem to find a step-by-step process on how to effectively do this.

I am more than happy to provide any additional details if required.

Looking forward to your response.

Regards,

Jacob

Hi All,

I made some changes and adjustments over the weekend and have managed to resolve my issues. Thank you Shan for the articles mentioned above. The one about recovering from unspported one-way replication was especially helpful.

I will notate my step by step process in case someone else comes across this problem.

Problem: In a full-mesh topology, I had two folders within a replication group that were not replicating properly. The only information that was successfully revealed was a backlog of 7000+ transactions on one folder and 3000+ on another. I am Running W2K8 Servers at three separate facilities with 10 Mbps links.

Solution:

1) Backup all copies of the replicated folder

2) Find out which DC each file server is connecting to with : “WMIC /namespace:\\root\microsoftdfs path DfsrReplicationGroupConfig get LastChangeSource”

3) Delete the replicated folder from DFS Management

4) Force synchronization of AD to ensure the change in DFS is replicated to all the file servers

“repadmin /syncall /d /e /P < dc name> <Naming Context> “

5) Log onto the affected file servers and Poll AD “dfrsdiag pollad” – This will cause the changes in DFS Management to be reflected on the other servers.

6) Stop the DFS Replication service on all the affected file servers

7) Backup and delete the DFSRPrivate folder on each server.

8) Restarted the DFS Replication Service on all the affected file servers

9) Created a new replicated folder in DFS Management

10) Force synchronization of AD to ensure the change in DFS is replicated to all the file servers

“repadmin /syncall /d /e /P < dc name> <Naming Context> “

11) Log onto the affected file servers and Poll AD “dfrsdiag pollad” – This will cause the changes in DFS Management to be reflected on the other servers.

12) Wait for initial replication to kick off

13) Wait for the folders to finish synchronizing.

Once the initial replication kicked off, DFS began doing a synchronization of the folder. It took some time, but once it was done. It was all sweet and caught up.

A couple of items to note:

I was lucky in the fact that my central file server was where all the data was replicating to. This meant that it was a bible for me and I could use it as my primary source of replication. However I still backed up all the site servers affected.... just in case.
Although the process above worked a treat for me, I cannot say that it is the official Microsoft way of fixing this problem or that it will work for you. In other words, The advice above comes as-is, and there are no guarantees.
Thanks everyone.

TCP off-loading on the network level may be causing the error message which you have posted. So please add these following registry values to all DFSR replications partners to see if it can be helpful.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

Value =DisableTaskOffload
Type = DWORD
Data = 1

Value =EnableTCPChimney
Type = DWORD
Data = 0

Value =EnableTCPA
Type = DWORD
Data = 0

Value =EnableRSS
Type = DWORD
Data = 0

Or install latest NIC drive.

please make sure all the necessary DFS ports on all the DFSR replications partners are not blocked by firewall or any other device. For more detailed information about the ports, please refer to the following link:

User Action:

=========

1. Please open the ADSIedit.msc console to verify the "Authenticated Users" is set with the default READ permission on the following object:

a. The computer object of the DFS server

b. The DFSR-LocalSettings object under the DFS server computer object

2. After the permissions is set correct, please run "DFSRDIAG POLLAD" to pick up the changes.

3. Another possible reason is that FSRM is configured as some types of files are blocked from DFS replication. When the DFSR filters are not set to match FSRM screens by extension and the files exist on the server before screening, this can lead to degraded DFSR performance and the files will never replicate.

If possible, please remove file screening and reconfigure it to remove files by extension or set a comparable DFSR filter rule to prevent replication attempts.

On the LG*** server, it said that “DFS Replication cannot replicate with partner due to a communication error.” “Check for network connectivity problems, for troubleshooting RPC issues”

Analyze:

=======

This error message generally caused by the network issue, such as:

1. The network connect between the two servers is broken.

2. the necessary ports are blocked by the firewall or other devices.

3. the DNS issue.

User Action :

===========

1. Ping the LE** server from the LG** server to check the network connection.

2. Run nslookup LE** server to check if the DNS name resolution can work properly.

3.Temporarly disable the firewall to check if the issue can be fixed. And double confirm all the necessary DFS ports are not blocked by any other device.

According KCC error message, please refer to the following link, it also tell us the reason and solution:

Event ID 1311: Replication configuration does not reflect the physical network
