Companyweb" broken after Microsoft updates

Postby blin » Sun Nov 20, 2011 10:40 pm

I need some help getting companyweb up and running again. This is on a SBS 2008 Server. I have tried a few things but I don't want to make it worse. After performing:

1.Update for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 X64 Edition (KB2553018)
2.Security Update for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 X64 Edition (KB2493987)
accessing the company web portal gives a 404 error. Following instruction on blogs and forums, I ran:

psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait -force

Which failed:

"Performing configuration task 1 of 4
Initializing SharePoint Products and Technologies upgrade...

Successfully initialized SharePoint Products and Technologies upgrade.

Performing configuration task 2 of 4
Initiating the upgrade sequence...

Failed to initiate the upgrade sequence.

An exception of type System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException was thrown. Additional exception information: Database state ca
nnot be changed while other users are using the database 'SharePoint_Config_29c26fca-17b8-48c1-9704-b869932abcb6'
ALTER DATABASE statement failed.
sp_dboption command failed.

Total number of configuration settings run: 2
Total number of successful configuration settings: 1
Total number of unsuccessful configuration settings: 2
Successfully stopped the configuration of SharePoint Products and Technologies.
... "

Other reading has me restart the SQL server and try again, without the -wait... This time the error is different. Instead of 404 the Companyweb now gives the following error:

"Cannot connect to the configuration database."

I see this in the event logs:

SQL Database 'SharePoint_Config_29c26fca-17b8-48c1-9704-b869932abcb6' on SQL Server instance 'np:\\.\pipe\MSSQL$Microsoft##SSEE\sql\query' not found. Additional error information from SQL Server is included below.

Cannot open database "SharePoint_Config_29c26fca-17b8-48c1-9704-b869932abcb6" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'.

Also, the following services stopped and did not restart while running psconfig this time:

1.SharePoint Services Timer
2.Terminal Services Gateway
3.World Wide Web Publishing
It was possible to manually start each of these.

It is not clear to me what the next step in resolving this is. I can/will provide logs or addtional information as requested.

As the error message relates to farm, I suggest that recreate a new server farm and check if you can access to the companyweb. You can go to the following link to get more information.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/For ... 83794b386/

Create a new SharePoint Farm on the server

Took Backup of ShareWebDb from SQL

Deleted the following Database from SQL

SharePoint_AdminContent Database

SharePoint_Config_29c26fca-17b8-48c1-9704-b869932abcb6

Took backup of Registry :

Deleted :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\Secure\ConfigDB\DSN

Modified:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\WSS\ServerRole

Change Value from ‘SINGLESERVER’ TO ‘WFE’

Deleted: IIS Web application

SharePoint Central Administration V3

SBS SharePoint

Deleted: Application pool

SharePoint Central Administration V3

SBS Sharepoint AppPool

"Run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard now" is checked and click "Close". Click Next

Click Yes to the services restart warning

Choose "No, I want to create a new server farm" and click Next

Enter the following on the Specify Configuration Database Settings page and click

next:

Database Server == SERVERNAME\Microsoft##SSEE

Database Name == SharePoint_Config_29c26fca-17b8-48c1-9704-b869932abcb6

Username == Domain\AdminUser

Password == Your Password

Accept the default of NTLM and click Next

Click Next on the Advanced Settings page

Click Finish

Wizard completed successfully.

Please check if you can browse SharePoint Central Admin website.

Created a new Web application “SBS SharePoint” with application pool “SBS Sharepoint AppPool” using Network Services.

Port = 80

Hostheader = Companyweb

Url = http://companyweb

Database name= Temp

Removed the Temp DB from SBS SharePoint using SharePoint Central Admin

Using STSADM.exe added ContentDB

STSADM.exe –o addcontentdb -url http://companyweb –databasename ShareWebDb

Please ran the PSconfig command again and check if it can complete successfully. If not, please collect latest upgrade.log and PSCDiagnostics log.
