How can i use my vhd to make a Hyper-V VM

Postby guest » Sun Jan 01, 2012 11:37 am

i want to move my server as a VM on my new server which supports Hyper-V tech.

my old one was windows server 2003 r2 SP2 i tried alot of ways to do this but all with no result.

i took a backup from my windows and then made a new vm and i restored the backup to it but it didnt work.

i used VMWare converter and then i converted the vmdk to a vhd file. then made w new VM and assign to it the vhd file but it resulted the Blue display with Stop 0×000000FC……
WHAT CAN I DO?

If you are trying to convert a physical machine (where the operating system is installed on bare metal) download the trial of SCVMM 2008 and use the converter.

(I would try SCVMM 2008 first)

I would begin with SCVMM first, as it will do your operating system fixup.

You can also use the free XenConvert to convert to a VHD and then copy the VHD to the Hyper-V host and create a new VM using that VHD.

You can also mount the physical disk of your server to the Hyper-V host (a 'maintenance' host that is not in production) and use the Physical to VHD process that is hidden under the New Disk wizard.

One of the big hurdles of moving from VMware to Hyper-V is that VMware uses all SCSI presented disks, where Hyper-V uses IDE presented disks. For older Windows operatins systems, this means that you have to inject a new critical boot device driver or you will fail on the boot. The SCVMM converter will take care of this for you. XenConvert will also inject a compatible driver as well.
