Cannot run Windows 2008 R2 with VirtualPC on Windows7

Postby guest » Wed Jan 25, 2012 3:18 pm

I've installed Windows7 64bit (Enterprise) on my AMD Athlon 64 System.
After all automatical Updates, I've installed the VirtualPC 6.1.7600. (64bit)

I created a new Virtual machine:
Windows Server 2008, an own VHD, 1 GB RAM...

When I try to install "Windows Server 2008 R2 (64bit)", the setup interrupts with this errormessage:
"Attemping to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with 64-bit mode"

Is it not possible to run a 64bit-OS with VirtualPC on Windows7?

Hi, Virtual PC for W7 only runs 32bit Operating Systems. The Virtual PC 64bit is for using with W7 64bit and the same for W7 32bit. The XPmode Virtual machine is the same it only runs a 32bit XP. To run Win 2008 64 bit. You will have to use Vmware Server see link below.

Also check this link and check your CPU spec's for Virtualization. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86_virtualization

..Just an addition to artiste1's post. You can check out VMWare server, but if you want another free option, take a look at VirtualBox. VirtualBox will support 64bit guests. They support it if you're running a 32bit OS on a 64bit capable processor with virtualization extensions enabled. However, the smoothest option is to run VirtualBox on a 64bit host if you want to run 64bit guests.

Apart from that, it's a very good virtualization program. I love Microsoft technologies and I defend and use them here at the office, but I have to admit that VirtualBox is a great program. It will run Windows guests as well as many different distros of Linux guests. It is very stable and has releases more often than VirtualPC. I have been using it a lot at home and I almost like it better than VirtualPC. Anyway, I just thought that I'd chip in with another option to try until VirtualPC adds support for 64bit guests.
