Migrating Server 2003 SBS to 2008 R2 Via Swing method

Postby guest » Fri Apr 27, 2012 10:44 pm

I am trying to find a guide on how to migrate to 2008 Enterprise R2. I will be installing brand new hardware and would like to keep my existing server name, group policies, etc. I have used the swing method in the past. Is this still the easiest and best method?

ADMT is not available in your case as SBS2003 does not support trusts.

• Importing and exporting Active Directory data
Using csvde.exe or ldifde.exe you can export objects from the Small Business Server environment. This will retain usernames and group memberships, but will reset all SIDs. SIDs are used to access resources like Exchange mailboxes en file shares, so you'll be looking at exporting/importing Exchange mailboxes as well and setting up your NTFS rights and share permissions manually.

• Transitioning using a temporary Domain Controller
Small Business Server allows you to place a second Active Directory Domain Controller to the SBS environment. After you've exported the mailboxes and moved the files you can shut down the Small Business Server and seize the FSMO roles on the additional Domain Controller. From that point on you can in-place upgrade the server to Windows Server 2008 R2. Then you can build the (x64) Domain Controllers for your definite environment.

• Using the SBS transitionpack
You can purchase a Small Business Server transition pack, which transforms your Small Business Server license to a Windows Server license and Exchange Server license. Running the transitionpack results in a 'normal' Windows Server 2003 installation with Exchange Server 2003. You can then transition to Windows Server 2008 R2 by adding Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controllers to the domain.
