Error regarding "Another installation is in progress".

Postby guest » Tue May 08, 2012 10:55 pm

After a successful install of Windows Home Server 2011 RC, everything is updated and I'm feeling good about things. I go to my client machine and, in a browser, I type http://<servername>/Connector. I download the connector software from the server and I run it as an administrator. After clicking on 'Next' I receive the following error:

"Cannot connect the computer to the server because either another software installation is in progress, or, the computer has a restart pending. Either complete the installation process, or, restart the computer and try to connect again."

I have restarted both my server as well as my client machine, but the error continues to come up. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on my client machine. I have no updates or restarts pending on either machine. I can RDP to my server just fine and access it like everything is great. I just can't get this Connector software to get going.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Update/Solution: For those of you experiencing this issue. Here is the solution I found that worked for me:

Any application can set a pending reboot flag in the operating system through a registry key. Sometimes a reboot does not clear the flag. This is what setup is detecting.

To work around the pending reboot issue:
1. Open Regedit
2. Find the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager"
3. Rename the "PendingFileRenameOperations" value to "PendingFileRenameOperations2"

Cause

This problem may occur because an earlier software installation on the client computer has left the computer in a restart pending state, and restarting the computer does not clear the state.

To fix this problem yourself on the client computer, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2.Locate and then click to select the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

3.After you select the subkey that is specified in step 2, right-click PendingFileRenameOperations, and then click Delete.
4.Locate and then click to select the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

5.After you select the key that is specified in step 4, right-click RebootRequired, and then click Delete.
6.On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.
7.Restart the computer.
Note: This steps applies on the client computers running all versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8

Yeah I would warn people not to do this fix without first simply restarting their client pc.

Rebooted the client.
uninstalled WHS connector
rebooted AGAIN

Thanks, this was error was really getting to me. I'd installed the connector on two other machines without a problem, but my main desktop PC just kept displaying this error after multiple reboots.

Below was the value in that key:

\??\C:\Windows\TEMP\logishrd\LVPrcInj03.dll

\??\C:\Windows\TEMP\logishrd\

\??\C:\Windows\TEMP\logishrd\LVPrcInj04.dll

This logitech dll also looks appears to be the cause of my problem.
I believe that is the same file I was seeing. I just uninstalled the Webcam software and Connector ran fine.
