Running SQL server to a VM on a Failover Cluster

Postby chicagotech » Wed Mar 20, 2013 8:42 am

Q: One of our clients has a Failover Cluster running on two Windows 2008 Datacenter R2 Servers and EqualLogic SAN. There are two VMs and they work great. They also have a SQL server on a physical server. With limit budge, they wonder if it is possible just converting SQL server to a VM in Failover Cluster. In other words, they don’t have money to hire consultant to create SQL Failover and buy new hardware. If yes, any disadvantages? If not, what are the other suggestions?

A: Yes, you can. However, SQL Server has built-in clustering features like AlwaysOn and Database Mirroring with a better performance, better load balancing and better uptime.
