DFS Replication problem

Postby guest » Mon Apr 07, 2014 6:30 pm

Situation: We are running windows 2012 R2 servers. We created DFS on both servers. The problem is it doesn't show “Read only” when two users open the same file. If both users make change, we have two version of the same file. For example, the user A opens schedule.xls, he opens it from the dfs03 (the folder properties show dfs03 is active). At the same time, the User B opens the same name file, it open from dfs04 (dfs04 is active). After they modify the file and save, we have two version of the same name files in the system. My temporary solution is mapping the dfs03 server only instead of domain and replicate all files from dfs03 to dfs04. The problem is if the dfs03 is down, we need to change the mapping manually.

Microsoft Engineer reply: “I would like to say that from the screenshots, we can know the files are in the same target folders on two different servers. By design, if the files are in two different servers, there will be no alert. it will not show any warning about this file is in using. The last edition version will be saved and replicated according to the DFSR conflict algorithms.”

These are my tests steps:
1. Open book1.xlsx from dfs03.
2. Open book1.xlsx from the dfs04.
3. Both computers opening the same file and with same content.
4. I make a change and save the first open book1 file on the dfs03.
5. Then make a change and save the book1 on the dfs04.
6. both saving not errors and not warning.
7. Now if I open the book1, it open with the last save copy of book1 (saved in dfs04).

You can see the problem. The first person's change loses. How can we prevent it? It must a way to prevent it.

Suggestion:

==========

By design, if the files are in two different servers, there will be no alert. it will not show any warning about this file is in using. The last edition version will be saved and replicated according to the DFSR conflict algorithms.

To avoid this situation, I suggest you disable other target folders and only keep one folder target which will points to only one server as the screenshot below, so all the users try to access the DFS path will connect to folder on the same server.
