Rebuild Windows Server 2012 R2 and DC

Postby blin » Thu Feb 25, 2016 1:05 pm

One of our clients has a performance issues on their Windows Server 2012 R2 STD - Microsoft Essentials Service running. This server is also domain controller. This is what Dell technician suggests:

Discussed the plan to increase performance on the Poweredge T620 server.

- System OS is Windows Server 2012 R2 STD - Microsoft Essentials Service running - Remove service

- System running RAID 0 sliced into 3 Virtual disks - Agreed to recreate two independent volumes & install C: on 1 hard drive & D: (Data) on the 2nd hard drive. Assistance by Dell support.

- Backup Windows OS & DATA & restore after re-install.

- Implement suggested settings for Window 7 Virtual machine if needed.

- Install File Maker Pro on Window Server 2012 R2 & test to confirm workability.

- Confirm performance has increased on File Server.

We have two questions regarding Windows Server/DC.

1. System OS is Windows Server 2012 R2 STD with DC/DNS/DHCP installed and Microsoft Essentials Service running. Can we remove Microsoft Essentials Service? If so, how?

2. Can we use Windows Backup to back up Windows OS/DC. Then restore it after we rebuild the server? Or any better recommendation?

For the first question:
You can remove the Windows Server Essentials Experience role. Following the removing steps mentioned in below link, section - Q2: Can we remove the Windows Server Essentials Experience role:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Fo ... essentials

For the second question:
You can backup/restore DC with a Bare Metal Restore. It can be used when there is no other DC in your environment. You may reference - How to restore a Windows installation or move it to different hardware – for more information:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/249694

In addition to the aforementioned methods, migration would also be considered, but, it will need more action as you need to migrate back to current hardware.

You think splitting the data disc from the OS disc will be faster than Raid 0?

Are you going to use the Essentials experience?

In any event Backup and restore should work fine as long as the destination is as large or larger than the source. I think I would keep a raid configuration of some type either raid 0 or 1 with just one disc so that the OS continues to use the same drive subsystem or were you going to pull the raid out?

Oh, backup and restore is full. As in you would not install server then Restore AD
