Situation: The client is running 2 Windows 2008 R2 servers as domain controllers (DC01 and DC02). They are plan to upgrade the DC to Windows 2012 R2. Here is the plan:

1. Build two new DCs with Windows 2012 R2, DC03 on vmhost03 and DC04 on vmhost02, and join the domain.
2. Update the Schema: ran the following from the Windows Server 2012 R2 source media – Insert the Windows Server 2012 R2 DVD into the DVD drive of the Windows Server 2008 / R2 Domain Controller
f:\support\adprep\adprep /forestprep
f:\support\adprep\adprep /domainprep
3. Raising the Function Level of the Domain from 2003 to 2008 R2 (it don’t require, but it will take advantages of windows 2012 R2 features).
4. Install AD DS by using Server Manager.
5. Transferring the Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) Role.
6. Transfer DHCP and DNS server to the new DC.
7. Check if the roles were properly transferred, open command prompt and type: netdom query fsmo. If you see your new server listed in each role, you have successfully transferred all of your FSMO roles to the new server
8. Transfer DNS and DHCP.
9. Test the new DC for one week and shutdown DC01 and DC02.
10. Remove DC01 and DC02 from the system after one week.
