How to manually register a DLL or OCX file

Postby guest » Mon Nov 12, 2007 4:07 pm

Note: Users may need to be logged in as a Local Administrator to register files.

Windows Vista:
Click Start, Run.
Enter cmd in the search line.
At the command prompt, enter:
REGSVR32 "PATH TO THE DLL FILE"
Be sure to include the quotation marks if the path contains any spaces.
Click OK.
Note: If the UAC is turned off, this is not necessary. You can register the DLL straight from the Run/search line.

Windows XP and prior:
Open Windows Explorer and locate the DLL or OCX file to be registered.
Right-click on the file and select Open With. Note: If another menu appears, select Choose Program.
If a Caution window appears, click Open With again.
In the Open With window, click Other.
Browse to the SYSTEM32 folder (located in either C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 or C:\Windows\SYSTEM32).
Highlight REGSVR32.EXE and click Open.
Click OK.
Note: Marking the 'Always use this program to open these files' checkbox allows you to right-click and select Open on other DLL files.
Click OK. A confirmation message appears once the file is registered.
OR

Click Start, Run.
In the Open field, enter:
REGSVR32 "PATH TO THE DLL FILE"
Be sure to include the quotation marks if the path contains any spaces.
Click OK.
