XP machines randomly loose map drive connections

Postby msthac01 » Tue Nov 13, 2007 9:35 am

I run a small office of about 65 pc's with 2 server running as domain controllers. What happens is randomly people will lose their connections to their mapped drives which also stores the information for a particular program that is immensely important to their daily jobs. When they lose their connections I usually reboot a couple of times and eventually they reconnect and get their drives back through the logon script. Whenever the logon script fails to map the drives it gives the error -- "System Error 1396 Logon Failure-The target account name is incorrect" Any suggestions on what could be going on?

I see errors in the dns event viewer, event ID's 4004, 4011 4015 see different ones at different times. Just weird because after several reboots it eventually establishes the connections and everything is fine.

This is some things to do with the DNS settings. I would check the DNS settings first. Or give us more details about your DNS. This link may help too.

I checked out the link you provided and tried using the netdiag and dcdiag as it suggested to find any problems. I couldn't get the netdiag to work it kept giving me the error "---------------------------
NETDIAG.EXE - Entry Point Not Found
---------------------------
The procedure entry point DnsGetPrimaryDomainName_UTF8 could not be located in the dynamic link library DNSAPI.dll.
---------------------------

When I ran dcdiag test everything passed except the following section: frsevent, it said there were errors in the event viewer within the last 24 hours after the SYSVOL has been shared.

I checked the event viewer and found the following event 13508. The same event shows up on the other DC as well. Apparently there is an issue with the File Replication Service between the 2 DC's. I checked and the service is running on both DC's, I really don't know what else to check. Need any more info just ask, thanks for any help.
