Solved: Vista can net view but not browse network

Postby chicagotech » Thu Mar 01, 2007 10:15 pm

Situation: The client just added a new Vista to their domain. All XP computers can browse the whole network and see each other. The Vista can access other computers and net view lists all local computers. However the Vista can't browse the network. The Vista see only itself.

Troubleshooting:

1. The VISTA can ping DC.
2. The DNS and WINS setup correctly, and nslookup displays no error.
3. No error in the Event Viewer.
4. Use browstat to check the master browser status. It receives unable to retrieve master browser error.
5. Check the WINS records and find one of XP is the master browser instead of the DC.
6. Open regedit and find the IsDomainMaster is FALSE. Change it to TRUE.

Note: Why do other XP can browse? Perhaps the NetBIOS over TCP/IP is checked.

Firewall blocking? Configure firewall to specifically permit the IP addresses of the other PCs on the network.

Have all the XP computers installed the LLTD patch? Vista will not be able to see them without it.

Read a post in the Internet. Microsoft tech support confirms that slow computer browser issue. Microsoft is trying to do new way to browse network resources and move away from Netbios traffic/Master browser.

Hello Robert,

Thanks for those links regarding master browser.

I think now i have traced the issue. I have noticed that when my xp desktop
becomes the master browser, i cannot view the xp desktop icon in my vista
laptop network, but like i have said earlier, can browse using \\pcname.

Also, i see that i cannot open the link "my workgroup computers" from xp. It
says that 'Workgroup not accessible..... list of servers not available.'

Instead, when my vista laptop becomes the master browser, it can display the
xp desktop icon in the network.

The logical workaround for it was to make my vista laptop the default master
browser.

I went to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters

added a string IsDomainMaster=Yes on vista laptop and IsDomainMaster=No on
xp desktop.

This seems to have fixed the issue for now. Though i wonder if there is any
other proper workaround for this issue.

Regards

If you can map using IP but name, this is name resolution issue. Have you enabled the NetBIOS over TCP/IP? This link may help too,

Vista Name Resolution IssuesWindows Vista requires an open port 139 and NetBIOS enabled on the server to map a server share through a VPN connection - very poor for security! ...

Got a problem which I've searched for and many seem to have the same problem
but have yet to see an answer to it.

typing \\ip (i.e. 192.168.100.xxx) works great, every time. But typing the
computername instead, like \\media does not.

I got it working by disabling the firewall before and found out that the
"Registreringstjänst för Datornamn för Windows Collaboration" (thats swedish
- my attempt to translate it would be "Registrationsservice for computernames
for Windows Collaboration" (not a big fan of localized software)) exception
in the firewall resolved it.

Problem is I restored my computer using System Restore due to a faulty
driver and since then I haven't been able to get access to this again. Even
with the firewall completely off.
I have enabled file-sharing in the network properties and the \\ip do work
(and always had).

Don't know if something got messed up in the system restore but as said,
this is a common problem so there should atleast be some solution to it.
