Print Server won't work unless I disable OneCare firewall

Postby guest » Tue Dec 14, 2010 9:28 am

Have a linksys WPSM54G and can only make my Vista computer work with it by disabling the OneCare Firewall. Either I need to know how to punch a hole through the firewall, (I've tried all the obvious ones, at least to me within the Firewall config), or I need to know how to turn the OneCare firewall off permanently (NOT just for one hour or day) so I can use the standard Windows firewall (which I have read works with this print server device WPSM54G).

Thanks,

Larry

Hello All ...

I have been working with OneCare Technical Support for about two weeks. After trial and error a solution has been found. I have posted it below so all of you can fix your LinkSys Print Server problem. They asked me for some suggestions on making OneCare better. If they incorporate my idea, you'll love the next version:

Step 1: Enable Network Discovery

=====================

1.Open the Start Menu and type network in the search box and then click Network and Sharing Center.1.Click the down arrow all the way to the right of Network Discovery.1.Check off Turn on network discovery and then click Apply.

NOTE: We removed Step 2 because it was not necessary when using the LinkSys Wireless Print Server. Go to Step 3 ....

Step 3: Enable File and Printer Sharing in OneCare

===============================

1.Open OneCare, and then click Change settings.
1.Under Firewall tab, click Advanced settings.
1.Under Ports and protocols tab, enable the option “File and Printer Sharing –for local network(subnet)”1.Then click OK.
Step 4: Add a new port and protocol for Linksys WSPM54G print server

=============================

1.Open OneCare, and then click Change settings.
1.Under Firewall tab, click Advanced settings.
1.Under Ports and protocols tab, click Add…
1.Edit the information.
1.Name: Linksys WSPM54G print serverProtocol: TCP/UDP
Port Range: 30000 to 64000
Both [local ports ]

Local network (subnet)

6. Click OK.

Check if the issue is resolved?

This worked on all three of my PCs running 3 different versions of Vista, so it should fix your problem as well.
