What is the difference between a wireless modem and a router? I have a regular dsl modem from verizon, and just got another computer, which is a laptop. I was told that I needed a router, but someone else told me that I needed a wireless modem. I don't know what I need.

They could be the same thing. In the old day, router may be do more than modem and modem is just a gateway to access the Internet. The router can be DHCP, DNS and provide more features. However, today, many modem do the same.
