Troubleshooting wireless slow issue

Postby chicagotech » Wed Oct 09, 2013 11:32 am

If the wireless works fine before, reset wireless router and/or internet gateway is the first step. If it is still slow after reset, we may try one or multiple of these troubleshooting steps:

1. Upgrade wireless router firmware
2. Modify Wireless Operating Mode. General speaking, 802.11g is faster than 802.11b, and even faster is 802.11n. However make sure the device support the same mode. Mixed Network (802.11b/g/n, 802.11b/g) – Let's check out this example: In an 802.11b/g/n mixed network, you can get good network speed by using 802.11n wireless adapter if connecting alone, however once an 802.11g or 802.11b user joined the network, your network connection speed may be slowed by half or more. Therefore, you are advised to use the wireless adapters that support same wireless standard (802.11n, 802.11g or 802.11b) on wireless network to have better wireless network performance, and at the same time you can configure wireless router to support particular wireless standard only.
3. Location. No matter what type of wireless router you have, the placement of the device has an impact on your signal. Place your router in a central location. If possible, place it near the middle of the home or close to the wireless devices. Keep your router away from walls and metal objects. These will interfere with the signal, making it weaker.
4. Security settings. Wireless security slows down the speed. It is recommended to use WPA2/AES and enable WMM instead of WEP.
5. Change different channel such as 1 or 11
