My spell check doesn't work

I'm running a standalone PC with the following:
- MS XP Pro, SP2
- MS Word 2002, SP3

Spell check used to work and highlight misspellings with a wavy red
underline. Then spell check suddenly stopped working. I wasn't making any
changes to my PC or to Word at the time that spell check stopped working.

Now Word does not flag misspelled words as I type, and if I press F7, Word
finds no errors and I get a message: "The spelling and grammar check is
complete."

Spell check doesn't flag spelling errors when I deliberately type gibberish:
qwer, lkjh, asdf, etc.

Before writing to you, I read your answers to other users. Based on what you
told others to do, I checked my settings which are shown here:
- MS Word... Tools... Language
- English (US) is the default; this is my language
- The following is checked: Detect language automatically
- MS Word... Tools... Spelling & Grammar
The following are checked:
- Check spelling as you type
- Always suggest corrections
- Ignore uppercase, numbers, Internet and file addresses

Also under MS Word... Tools... Spelling & Grammar
- Custom dictionaries... Custom.dic is my default; no other dictionaries
are listed

If you need more info. about my PC and settings I'll gladly provide it.

You might want to check the following setting in MS Word:

Tools... Language... Set Language
- make sure there is no check mark in the box "Do not check spelling or
grammar"

I didn't know the setting existed, but when I accidentally found it, there
was a check mark in the box, so my spell check wasn't working. I removed the
check mark and it works fine now.

In my case, the document is too large with a lot pictures. If I divide to 2 or more parts, I can use spelling.
