Softphone: unable to acquire media input

Postby chicagotech » Fri Oct 27, 2017 3:17 pm

Situation: The client is using Shoretel Softphone in Communicator. The softphone initialize successfully, but when trying to make calls the calls never go out with this popup: unable to acquire media input.

Troubleshooting: Softphone polls Windows for available audio devices, and must have both an Input and Output device available and configured in Windows before they can be made available to the Softphone application.

You can easily check these devices in Windows as follows:

1. In Windows 7 or 8, you can right-click the ‘Speaker’ icon in the Windows System/Notification tray and see the following pop-up

2. Select either ‘Playback devices’ or ‘Recording devices’, and on each tab you should see one or more devices showing Green.

SOFTPHONE MUST HAVE BOTH A RECORDING DEVICE (mic) AND A PLAYBACK DEVICE (speaker) AVAILABLE BEFORE IT CAN MAKE OR RECEIVE CALLS.
If either tab is empty or shows only red (disconnected) devices, then softphone calls will fail because of No Resource.
