Netgear Router - Network works, internet doesn't

Postby Fisch » Mon May 07, 2007 8:51 am

I have a brand new Dell Inspiron laptop with Vista and a Netgear RangeMax Next Wireless Router (WNR834B). I have a network connection, but no internet. If I use an Ethernet cable to the Router, the internet connection is fine. Yesterday, I installed Netgear's Vista drivers and the internet worked - until I rebooted. Now it's gone again.

My brother has the same set-up (Dell & Netgear), but Windows XP. His is fine. He also tried my laptop with his network and it still didn't work with the internet connection - although his laptop/internet works perfectly.

We're assuming there's a setting within Vista that I have wrong, but we haven't found anything. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks.

We have see many cases like this one. It is possible the router doesn't compitable with the Vista. These post may give you some tips.

Thanks for your quick reply!

We did double check that the router is compatible with Vista - at least, they say it is! :)

And I tried disabling the IPv6 this weekend - no luck.

I'll try the other tonight and post back. Thank you!

I tried your suggestions and they haven't worked. I then called Dell support and their 'solution' was to turn off my firewall. They told me I could turn on the Windows firewall, but leave off McAffee and it should work, but when I turned on Windows firewall again, it stopped working. If I have the firewall off, I connect to the internet just fine. With it turned on, I still connect to the network, but not the internet.

I thought I had read something before about security, but now can't find it...? Any thoughts? I can't believe Dell's solution was to turn off my security - and without telling me (they took control remotely). If I hadn't been watching them, I probably wouldn't have noticed the security was disabled! Crazy.

Normally, we don't recommend to use two Firewall or security software. Try this: turn off all firewall, Windows firewall and McAfee. Can you access the Internet? If yes, turn on only Windows firewall.
