The Java Virtual Machine has exited with a code

Postby guest » Tue Oct 19, 2010 11:07 pm

after the install of Endpoint, I have a java 1 error. The endpoint manager service is stopped and the scm-server-0.log and the catalina.out log show severe errors. This install is on a new server. The listening ports have all been confirmed that they are free. How do I get rid of the Java error and keep endpoint manager running?

Here is the catalina error:

08 Jan 2008 Hello,

The version of JRE you have installed is 2 revs too high. You'll need to downgrade to build 1.5.0_12-b04.

Hope this helps.+1 (1 vote)
Paul Murgatroyd 08 Jan 2008 thats the right java version for MR1, to me that log file looks perfectly normal - each time SEPM starts you will see those events at the top, its just information on OS, Java version, SEPM version, etc.

Can you tell us what you see in scm-server-0.log?

Have you reviewed the following KB?

08 Jan 2008 Thank you for your response. This is what is still going on after following the instructions.

I cannot access the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager as there is an error that says "failed to connect to the server."

The Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Service is set to automatic, but not started. There is an error in the event viewer Event ID 4096 Source: semsrv - The Java Virutal Machine has exited with a code of -1, the service is being stopped.

09 Jan 2008 Hi Paul

Thank you so far with your help, but so far there is still no joy. The ODBC connectivity test failed. I don't know that that is significant though, because I have another network that I have endpoint working on and it too fails. This is the 4th implementation of endpoint for me. Any other ideas would be gratefully accepted. everthing else checks out as according to the link you sent me.+1 (1 vote)

10 Jan 2008 I am having the same issue. Mine is a plain vanilla, follow the wizard install on a XP machine using the embedded database. I can connect using the ODBC wizard to the embedded database, but cannot connect via the SEPM console. I also installed the program with the custom web site option. I also get the Java -1 error whenever I try to start it. I have printed out all PDFS and KB articles and have followed all steps, as well as uninstalled and intsalled at least 6 times. Plus I have the newest version of the product. Really would like to know what the issue is, although I am past the point of allowing this product on my production network. Anyone out there solve this issue?

Also, clicking that link shown in the earlier message says it does not exist. I do have a symantec web site in my iis however.

11 Jan 2008 Well, here was the response from Symantec:
Hello Michael,

I looked at the log you sent, and it seems your IIS server is experiencing an HTTP 500 internal server error. This really has nothing to do with our software, but rather the IIS server itself. For more information on this error, please refer to the following link:

http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E500.html

Here was my response back:

There no errors in the application or system logs about an IIS error. The only error generated is the java -1 error by your program. There are no other web sites on this machine, in fact this is a clean install of XP's IIS. The website it is trying to connect to was created by YOUR install process. Therefore, that link is no help since it wants me to troubleshoot the website. I have no idea how YOUR website works, that YOUR software created and that YOUR program is trying to interface with. Especially since this is between the Tomcat software and IIS. I am not an expert in Symantec designed and created websites. I thought that was your job.

I am not trying to be ugly, but I am not the only one having this problem. And there are no answers coming from Symantec.

So what's next for me? I might still play with this software, if I can find another machine. Or maybe rebuild the machine I am currently on (I know, I know, VM, VM!! :smileywink:). What a mess.

Paul Murgatroyd 11 Jan 2008 Hi Mike,

Technically, both parties are right... the error is with IIS, but its OUR component under IIS... anyway, onto business. Firstly I apologise if you have already told all this to support, but I havent seen anything of your support case - if its easier to post the case number please do.

You say this is a vanilla build?
Are we therefore saying this is a Windows XP SP2 CD booted, installed then you installed SEPM or is there a little more to it? If you can elaborate on exactly what the machine is, how it was built, does it have a service pack, has it been patched, etc. then I would really appreciate it.

I want to get to the bottom of this and I want to find out whats doing it, but I can't reproduce the problem either on virtual or real hardware! Believe it or not I have installed SEPM with both embedded DB's and SQL DB's onto many different types of hardware many times over in my role here at Symantec and I never have any problems. If you can help me out here then I'm going to keep working through this until I can find out whats going on. Alternatively, would you perhaps be prepared to use something like VMWare converter (theres a free version) to make a virtualised version of your desktop that I can use to reproduce the problem.

If you'd prefer to move this to email then we can do, PM me for my address and I'll send it over. We can of course come straight back to the forum once I have all your details

many thanks and I await your reply!

11 Jan 2008 Hi Paul

I have installed this on 3 other networks and have had no problems either. This is my 4th install of Endpoint and it is on a brand new dell poweredge 1900 with twin 1.6 Quad Core Intel Xeon with 4 gig of Dual Ranked DIMMs. The OS is Server 2003 completely updated with all service packs and patches. Thats it. Nothing else except AD in an open OU with no GP's. The only other thing installed is Endpoint using the Symantec guidelines to install. The other 3 networks that I installed on are identical with the exception of this Dell has twin Quads. All of the other Networks are also equiped with ISA 2004. Rules on the ISA in all three of the other applications are locked down for internal and external traffic using Microsoft recommended hardening (to the letter). They work. I have total open communication on this new install, and am getting the errors.

Hope this helps.+1 (1 vote)

12 Jan 2008 Thanks Paul. I am also working with tech support. The last uninstall of endpoint (which was a step I was working on from Symantec tech support) caused several severe issues with the machine. In fact, the machine is still trying to start SEPM, but of course it is not there. So I am going to wipe the machine and start over. It is not the same machine I had a few days ago. Thank God for test units!

The Dell Dimension E520 (Pentium D 266, 2 GB Ram) machine was XP Professional SP2, fully patched. It had Word 2007, Open Office 2 (which was later uninstalled during testing), and SQL 2005 Express on it. The IIS package was just installed for Symantec Endpoint. So no other web sites, etc. I also installed java 1.5 (5.0). The Symantec install was a straight wizard install, using the custom website option. (I actually tried both). Only used the embedded database option everytime. I was able to connect using the ODBC wizard to the embedded database.

I will post the results of the re-wipe and re-install as soon as I can get to it early next week. If it works, great. I will then add the other programs one at a time. If I still get the same issue, I will be more than happy to virtualize my box and send it in. Like you, I am very curious. I would be glad to help solve this.+1 (1 vote)
Paul Murgatroyd 12 Jan 2008 thanks for the information Mike, very helpful... just one (for now) more quick question - was the machine built from a "recovery" type CD/DVD from Dell or a straight "insert XP CD, format and install" type?

thanks

12 Jan 2008 ooo. Good question. I think it still has the "straight from the factory" install on the primary parition. I don't remember if I ever fdisked it before. It I did, it was reinstalled with a Dell Recovery disk. That is all I have. I will also rebuild it with a Dell Recovery CD.+1 (1 vote)
Mike T
15 Jan 2008 Ok Paul. Everything worked fine after the rebuild. Of course, I won't be able to rebuild the production server and I would have to install IIS on it also. I wonder if that was the problem? On the test machine I installed IIS after all the post SP2 patches. On the rebuild I installed it right away, then applied all the patches. Or it could of been something else. But it still spooks me since the install process didn't catch it and it was tried so many times (until the machine finally bought it). The IIS "directory" entries did look a little different when it finally worked. So I have a big ???? on doing this on a working prod server. Might need a new standalone box.

My only problem now of the speed of my two test machines. The program is really slowing them down. They are both Pentium D's. But I need to research and see what the deal is. I see the workstation using 50% CPU at times (from the various SEPM processes). That will be an issue. But it is too early to tell.

27 Feb 2008 Hello,

I seem to have a similar problem, however the error log posts something slightly different.

I get a 401 error. I have tried everything in your post and in the linked suppport article but nothing helps.

Any other suggestions?

I let SEP create it's own IIS site so there shouldn't be any problems with other sites.

I hope that works for everybody. I had my install on XP SP2 (unable to afford another machine with Windows 2003), so the IIS options are different. Also, there were no web sites already running on the machine, so you think the SEPM install program would configure things correctly.
I am glad you found a solution for Windows 2003 however+1 (1 vote)

There is another program installed that uses Tomcat, but I can't even find a way to get the service to stay started.

29 Feb 2008 Hi Kooima

I just fianlly got rid of the Java error and got the engine running. I went into IIS and on the default site, checked off integrated user. That got the manager up and running, but now I am having issues with accessing it remotely. I will keep you up to date.

03 Mar 2008 Gui,
Thanks for the info, but I can't seem to find that option to uncheck. The only thing I see that is close to that is under Authentication and access control, there is Interegrated Windows Authentication, but that alread isn't checked. What am I missing?

03 Mar 2008 I am sorry. Here is the path:

Start > admin tools > IIS Manager > Server > Web Sites > Default Web Site > right click and select properties > Directory Security > Authentication and Access Control > Edit > put a check mark in Integrated Windows Authentication.

Then:

Start > Admin Tools > Data Sources (ODBC) > System DNS > Symantec Endpoint Security DSN > Configure > Login.

In here make sure that the User ID is DBA and the password entered should be the password you entered in for the Database when you did the install of SEP.

03 Mar 2008 Sorry, one more thing. After all that either restart the applicable serices, or if it is easier, restart the computer.

03 Mar 2008 Andy,
Thanks, that seems to have gotten me past the -1 Java Error. Now the service stops with a code of 1 instead. From what I can find that seems to be related to having another instance of Tomcat of the server. If I stop the VMWare Infrastructure Web Access Server, I can then get into SEP. The service doesn't stop.

Thanks again

Brent

03 Mar 2008 Glad I could help.

I have also found that the proactive threat protection will not work either. I am still working on that. I have seen several posts that say you may have to wait a couple of days, I am on to almost 2 months now.

26 Mar 2008 Hi!

I have upgraded from CE10.2.6.6000 to SEP 11.0.1375. the problem is the same java -1 error
also i cannot connect to the database from the odbc test page.

The machine is windows 2003 r2sp2 with iis running several internal sites. I asked SEP to create another site in iis wich is apparently fine, checked access settings.

I needed to change "symantec web server" port from the default 80 to 8881. do I need to change a setting in tomcat also?

checked that the database is listening on default ports but i did all the procedure tochange datbase ports from 2638 to 2639.

I don´t know what else to check...

The error log says error 404 page not found

26 Mar 2008 Update:

After digging with port conflicts i realized that another service was using tomcat too. It was "sysaid server".

then i changed the symantec´s tomcat ports from 8005 ->8006 and 9090 ->9091. I can then get the symantec endpoint protection manager service up.

but i still have problems odbc login errors. connection failed: unable to start database server

user : DBA
Pass: (encription passw) right???

26 Mar 2008 Cesar,

1) Login id : dba
Password : The password used to login to the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager

2)Server name is the host name(not the fqdn)

3)the database name is sem5

5)check tcp/ip with the following information in the field
host=xx.xx.xx.xx
where xx.xx.xx.xx is the ip address of the server

6)Shared memory should be checked as well.
De facto when AV does something, it starts jumping up and down, waving its arms, and shouting "Hey! I found a virus! Look at me! I'm soooo goooood!"

Rafeeq 29 Jul 2009 Follow this
there are 5 virtual directories in IIS
Secars
SEcreg
Content
Clientpackages
Reporting

Right click each one of them, Click on properties.
Click on directory security
in secure communication click on edit
unchek the option require secure communication

You have to do the same steps on all the 5 virtual directories...

Please don't forget to mark your thread solved with whatever answer helped you : ) Rafeeq
