Can Remote Desktop 2008 Licensing be used for W2003 servers?

Postby guest » Fri Dec 17, 2010 11:13 am

I know this will seem like a somewhat dumb question but I have a situation where I ordered W2008 Remote Desktop CALs which I have not yet used or installed but have discovered one of our legacy applications is only W2003 compliant. What I want/need to do is use W2003 Terminal Server now instead of W2008 Remote Desktop. Can I still use the same CAL's I purchased for W2008 RD to authenticate terminal server sessions for clients on a W2003 Terminal Server? The Licensing server is W2003, so I'm not sure if it will even accept the 2008 Licenses, and don't want to try using them then find out they dont work or have issues authenticating W2003 TS. Thanks for any input.

Hi foglifter, unforunately you wont' be able to activate 2008 TS CALs on a 2003 License Server. The license themselves are backwards compatible, but the license server must be Windows 2008 or Windows 2008 R2 if you bought RDS CALs. You can, however, install Windows 2003 TS CALs onto a Windows 2008 server.

Hello,

License servers for Terminal Services/Remote Desktop Services are backward compatible. For example, you can use Windows Server 2008 LS to issue Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003 and earlier versions’ CALs, but not for Windows Server 2008 R2.

Thanks.
